We decided to have an overnight getaway with our two daughters age 13 and 10. We thought we'd all enjoy ourselves, pool for the kids and spa for the adults. My husband and I had come here several years earlier without the kids for a relaxing weekend and enjoyed it very much. Now, however, the hotel, sloans tavern and mansion public space and restaurant are tired and in need of updating if they want to charge these prices. My daughters had manicures and one technician was so off putting and unfriendly, again, I was paying $30 for a ten year olds manicure. The food in the main dining room was so-so although our server very nice. I won't return here unless Cranwell decides to update. The hotel does not warrant these prices.

We are certainly sorry that you found the facilities to be a disappointment. We continually update our guest rooms and public spaces including the replacement of 18 guest rooms in 2012. A planned renovation of our Ballroom is expected to be completed in February of this year. We also have plans to update additional areas at the property including guest rooms and the Wyndhurst dining room in 2013.

What is this resort's definition of luxury? We tried to check in early but no luck. No big deal at all, but the desk clerk told us she would call when our room was ready --- never heard a word. We could hear every single footstep of the family staying above us and it sounded like they were throwing their ski boots, books, toys and who know what else down on the floor, never mind running laps up there. A luxury hotel has better soundproofing. The game room was one step up from a community youth center. A gate went down at some point, preventing us from walking back to our room through the glass walkways--hard to tell what was being protected. The dinner we had at Wyndhurst was truly delightful. At the same restaurant the next day, the breakfast buffet was underwhelming. Truly, the noise problem was the by far the biggest problem so ask for a room on the top floor. Good luck.

I’m so happy to see that you enjoyed many aspects of your visit, but sorry that your room was a problem for you during this particular stay. With our many guest room options, our Rooms Division Manager, would be happy to make arrangements that would assure your next visit will be peaceful and comfortable for you. Unfortunately, it is necessary to close off the entrance to the Spa due to the risk of injury with the pool and locker room areas, but we do provide shuttles at any time of the day and night for your use in the future.

We just had the most wonderful experience possible for our daughter's winter wedding. Customer service was excellent and went above and beyond our expections..The decor in the mansion was beautiful and elegant, and the warmth of the fireplace and richness of the deep wood was warm ,restful, and inviting. The rooms were peaceful, impeccably clean, and restful. The Bridal Suite was very large, comfortable, elegant, and had all the amenities you could dream of.The winter views of the Berkshires from the rooms, were storybook classic! This was important to us as the groom's extended family traveled in from California. We wanted them to enjoy the beauty of our area. They also raved about their rooms and service as well. They found all of the staff helpful and meals wonderful. The Cranwell staff, and especially the individualized wedding staff, were so very helpful. The wedding coordinators were on site and often anticipated our needs before we would ask. Hats off to Chris and to Bonnie for their orchestration! The decor and tablescapes in the Ballroom were set exactly to our vision. Perfection. Chris Schaffer, in particular ,assisted us in every way imaginable.Through her direction and support, she presented us with the best Wedding Reception a person could ask for.The food was amazing as well. Each dinner arrived hot and beautifully presented, with more than adequate portions. The bartenders were wonderful and timely. No waitng for drinks. The Brunch that was presented the day after the Reception was beyond delicious. The food was impeccably cooked and presented.. We definately received above and beyond quality service in all areas of our Wedding Reception weekend. I highly recommend The Cranwell to others who are looking for beautiful, timeless elegance. Well worth the investment.

We came on Christmas Day and booked a massage and dinner at the Mansion. Both were a bit disappointing, although the facilities and amenities were fine.

The masseuse was asked to provide a deep tissue massage, but he had no expertise in that style. It was barely a Swedish massage, but not at all therapeutic. It felt more like he was spreading on oil than kneading or massaging my muscles.

My Christmas dinner was an ahi tuna that tasted as if it had been seasoned with bottled ginger marinade and accompanied by reheated udon noodles. Very uninspiring. We also had hoped to have a special Christmas dinner menu (maybe prime rib or ham or turkey) but none was offered. What saved dinner was the complimentary bottle of house wine (a Napa white label), and what saved the spa experience was the lovely whirlpool, steam, indoor pool and and sauna.

The rooms are spacious, and we had a unit with a covered patio and large bathroom in the Founders building adjacent to the Spa (through an underground walkway.) The walls were paper thin, and when our neighbors arrived home and used the adjoining bathroom after we had gone to bed, we could hear them clamoring around and chatting as if they were in the same room as we were.

My iced tea in Sloane's Tavern was the color of Pepsi and had a foam head on it. When I suggested to the waitress that iced tea shouldn't have a head, she said, "that's what everyone said." I told her I had one the day before that looked and tasted like iced tea should and she stood there, unable to figure out what to do. I had to ask she take it back and serve me tap water.

The maid, to whom we had left a generous tip to clean our room, left several wet, dirty wash cloths and towels in our bath tub (which we had left there to indicate our request to collect and replace with fresh), and garbage from our waste can on the floor in the bathroom, which we discovered when we returned to our room after sightseeing this afternoon. On the plus side, she refreshed the Keurig coffee service for the AM.

Perhaps it was the holiday and the service staff was second stringers.

Room Tip: If you are going in winter, get a room in a building with the underground walkways to the SPA.

My husband and I spent three days in the Berkshires, and had made reservations at the Cranwell for Christmas. We found it on the internet and were looking forward to a romantic, quiet dinner.
We were not disappointed. The building is amazing. We were told that it had been private boys school for a while and we fantasized about the boys running in the halls and down the grand stairway. Hubby had the lamb shank, and I had the Ahi Tuna. Both were great choices. The ambiance was great, our only complaint, and it was minor was that the food came out too fast. I understand that it was a holiday and they had many, many bookings, so guessed that our table was booked a couple of times that night. But all in all, the service was great, the food super and the building amazing.

We are so pleased that you found us online and that we delivered what you expected. Our Gilded Age Mansion is indeed a wonderful setting for a romantic getaway and as you discovered, it’s also exceptionally rich in history. Edward Cranwell owned the property after the Depression Era and then deeded it to the Jesuit Society who transformed it into The Cranwell Preparatory School for Boys (1939 to 1972). You have a wonderful imagination. Our menu is fairly new, so we’re pleased that you enjoyed that as well. Here’s to a Happy New Year and many return visits to Cranwell Resort.

We took a few days away to rest and recover from illness. From the moment we arrived at Cranwell we felt like we'd won a lottery! We were warmly greeted and upgraded to a suite at no extra charge. The suite was incredible...large, understated elegance and comfort to the max! Lots of fluffy pillows and great bed linens. The sitting room was well equipped and had an additional TV. Everything was impeccably clean and well cared for. The room service was invisible and done to the tee! The waitstaff in the restaurants showed consideration and interest in meeting our needs. The food was great and all very reasonable. Even the hostess who greeted us at the door each morning was eager to see us and chat as she got us a table...and chose just the best spots for us. The spa was fabulous! The facilities met every need and felt very luxurious! The grounds are gorgeous! It is easy to see that in any season, Cranwell is a fabulous place to get away! A special shout out to Christina Velez in the breakfast room...for her heartfelt and excellence service! S. Brooks

Room Tip: We loved the Founders Cottage because of it's tunnel straight to the spa!

Thank you for the detailed review of your recent getaway to Cranwell Resort. Our staff will be thrilled to hear about your comments, especially Christina, who we are fortunate to have as a member of our breakfast service team. Founders Cottage, where you stayed, is one of three buildings that is conveniently connected to the Spa, either by tunnel or glass enclosed heated walkways. We hope you will return soon for more “resetting” time.

We reserved a premium room in the Mansion building that turned out to be a beautifully furnished two-room suite with large private balcony overlooking a gorgeous mountain landscape: truly a wonderful accommodation at a fair price. The journey to our room, however, was tortuous, since Cranwell is a rather massive resort with multiple entrances and winding roads. Since there is no primary gatehouse, security station, or permanent map of the grounds, we searched for the Mansion building which, fortunately, is a large and unique structure. Unfortunately, the Mansion building primarily houses the resort restaurants and is not staffed as a hotel. At mid-afternoon, breaking into a small meeting of restaurant employees in the fourth Mansion room searched, I was told rather indifferently that I needed to go to the registration building. There are no property signs directing one from the Mansion building to the registration building, so we became disoriented once again. Following a pleasant registration process, we made our way back to the Mansion building and located our room. Check-out again required us to return to the registration building. Although I highly recommend a premium room in the Mansion building, guests should understand that they will be residing above the resort restaurants. The lobby and lounges were loud and crowded all evening; no hotel staff is on premises, to my knowledge. We ordered a small breakfast from the menu in one of the dining rooms the next morning which was rather uninteresting and unevenly prepared; the breakfast check was $50 with tip. One final and admittedly odd note: the framed artwork in our suite and in the Mansion building hallways was strictly cheap reproduction on cardboard (Target quality). We love good, original artwork so this was especially disappointing, as there are wonderful artists in the region whose work might be selectively purchased and prominently displayed. A cheap Monet reproduction does not add to the ambiance of a well-furnished suite.
