“Authentic Taiwanese food - portions are small”

Since I work nearby, this place is convenient. The food is very good and the luncheon specials are worth it. Otherwise ordering any other time, the portions are small and pricey compared to other authentic Taiwanese restaurants but none are close by.

There is really no place to sit and eat here. Parking to pick up your food could be tricky during rush hour.

Most of the Taiwanese classics, like beef noodle soup, cuttle fish noodle soup, bah-won (steamed rice flour outside stuffed with pork), fried pork chop rice, etc., are the most authentic you're going to find in Lexington/Waltham. That said, the flavors could be better and the meat is sometimes a bit on the fattier side, portions could be better for the prices, which are high for Chinese food but just right to compete in the area. The boba milk tea is good. Again, if you have time to go to Chinatown or to Shangrila in Belmont, don't bother with this place. But for a quick delicious lunch in the area, this is the place to go.

As a Chinese/Taiwanese restaurant in the small strip mall, it is actually quite good. Considering the population of Chinese residents in town, any Chinese/Taiwanese restaurants around here are pretty good with a few exceptions.
Some dishes are impressive, while others are ordinary. I particularly enjoyed “Chinese Eggplants in Garlic Source” and “Twice Cooked Pork -Taiwanese Style. “ The eggplants in “Chinese Eggplants in Garlic Source” are very tender, and it is definitely recommended by me. “Twice Cooked Pork Taiwanese Style“has a delightful flavor, and my kids love it.
On the other hand, “Shrimp in Black Bean Sauce” was a quite disappointing. We were hoping to taste a very thick sauce using lots of black beans, since that is the usual case. However, the sauce was clear, and the beans actually swam in the transparent. Maybe it is a Taiwanese style sauce, but this was unexpected.
Lo Mein was also somehow different from our typical Chinese Lo Mein. The noodles were similar to that of the Japanese Udon, rather than the usual yellowish noodle. However, this style was also delicious.
Formosa Taipei offers weekly specials that are not written in the usual menu. One of them was fried dumplings using Chive flour, which we would have ordered if we had known. Don’t forget to ask what weekly specials are available before deciding all your orders.
Currently (September, 2010,) there is a coupon available on-line. If your order is more than $30, you can get either fried rice or Lo Mein noodle free. It is a deal. Since I think that Formosa Taipei’s quantity is only reasonable, this deal makes the entire meal a great deal.
This restaurant is mostly for take-out. There are three seats and a few benches available inside, but I would eat there only when I have to.
Overall, this restaurant is worth trying, especially if you live in the neighborhood. You could save gasoline and time, and enjoy pretty decent Chinese/Taiwanese food.
