Description: Tucked in a corner alleyway of Newton Center, Cafe Sol Azteca is a cozy and enchanting authentic Mexican mainstay for over 20 years. Featuring cuisine from the Mexico's capital you'll be won over by their cilantro and mole sauces that will make you think you just stepped back into the old country. A full bar features the classic requests of sangria, margaritas, and cervezas while adding plenty more like Mezcal drinks and their "to die for" Mango Mojitos. Nightly chef specials along with an extensive traditional and specialty menu leave your taste buds with plenty to experience. Catch them in the warm weather and join them on their outdoor patio featured on local television programs as the place to be.

“Good outdoor patio, mediocre food and service”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

We went here for dinner recently and got a nice table on the outdoor patio. Service was efficient to the point of brusk. Food was very heavy and greasy and there were no menu items containing fresh vegetables. Dishes from the kids menus were $6, which is about average, but then they charged us $2.50 for each cup of chocolate milk. I've never seen that before. Prices were high given the quality of the food. For outdoor seating, go instead to Union Street Restaurant....much better food and service for less money.

“Reliable food, good patio spot”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

Been eating here for years (decades, actually), but tend to go only when its warm enough to eat outside on the charming patio. Only really good outdoor eating spot in Newton, so take advantage of a nice evening. Menu has not really changed in the 20 years I have been going. Food very good, service efficient, free chips and salsa are homemade, not from a bag/jar. Combo plates where you can choose 2 or 3 tacos or enchiladas are a nice way to sample different sauces and fillings. Other favorites are cilantro shrimp and the guacamole. If you want reliable, but not innovative, food in a charming outdoor setting in the suburbs, I highly recommend this place.

“An old standby”
Reviewed 7 January 2014

I have been coming to Sol Azteca for years. Went tonight with 3 friends; it was freezing cold outside but warm and cozy inside. The ambiance is delightful; it feels like you could be in Mexico. The service was good; but the restaurant was empty. All of our food was standard Mexican fare and was fine. My main course could have been hotter. The sangria was great; others had Margaritas and they were happy. Sol Azteca is not exciting cuisine, but it met our needs tonight.

“What Happened?”
Reviewed 17 December 2013

This had been one of my favorite places for years but the last visit changed all that. The waiter was just above surly and the food served luke warm though the place was almost empty. The decor is largely the same as before and really charming.
Am sure the patio when opened will add to the pleasure of eating but the food won't.

“Delicious meal, nice little place in the basement”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

Contrarily to some of the other reviewers, I liked the ambiance. Colourful mexican tiles liven up a (pleasant) darkly-lit dining room. Fajitas were terrific, and the salsa was nice, with a bit of bite without being overly spicy.
