The Porches Inn North Adams

The only attraction of this hotel is that it is right opposite the Massachusetts Museum of Modern Art, a must go when you are in North Adams. The village itself is dull and unattractive at least in summer when we were there. I am not a big fan of so called "historic" hotels specially not when they are run by non professional hotel management. Althought the staff were very friendly and supportive, the hotel is average at best. If indeed MOcA did assist in refurbishing this hotel, I am not impressed at all. The decoration in the room is a jumble of quasi antique with unfitting furniture. Rather than a decent curtain the windows are covered by a rag of thin cotton. Ther is hardly any room for your luggage. Except for the bathroom which was OK, the rooms are not special at all, walls are made of paper. You can tell the hotel used to be in the past the houses of probably underpaid workers from North Adams. The breakfast room is way too small to handle the hotel guests. The breakfast choice is rather poor and if you are with 4 you have one table otherwise you have to fold yourself in the corner of this awkwardly unattractive place. All in all a big deception. As to North Adams, forget this village other than for the museum and rather stay in nearby Williamstown.

Dear Family DeWit,

Thank you for your recent stay.

We are very sorry that you did not like North Adams or the decor of The Porches Inn.
We are definitely a part of Historic Hotels and I am not sure why you quoted non-professional Hotel Management; would love to hear more about it.
North Adams is one of the most artistic cities in New England, there are lots of small artist galleries that you can visit and meet the artist directly and they are complimentary. Summer is one the most attractive time of the year, beautiful weather, galleries are operational everyday, great hiking spots.
While we understand that not everyone will appreciate the décor at Porches, we value feedback from our guests as it helps us to provide the level service of they expect. The muslin curtains are evocative of the linens that the former mill workers would have hung on clotheslines between these buildings.
Our breakfast room is small, we have trays for our guests to take it to their room or eat by the pool/porch/lobby. Our breakfast items are great quality; organic and farm yogurts, locally made granola, freshly baked muffins, croissants, locally baked breads, Vermont cheddar cheese, hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, cereal, organic coffee, harney and sons teas..I am sorry that you did not enjoy the items that we offered.

Best,

Mel@Porches

Comfortable in all regards with fine linens, towels etc. Air conditioning was quiet and worked well. Beautifully landscaped pool and surroundings. Breakfast was complete with eggs and yogurt.

But, room location is imperative if you're a light sleeper. The road is BUSY. I can't imagine sleeping on the front side next to the road. Registration building is noisy too with people checking in and out and getting breakfast.

Pool is open 24 hours which invites noisy pool party's. There needs to be a quiet time policy at the pool.

This is a very interesting property...wonderful use of old mill houses...lovely, well-appointed rooms, huge bathroom..we were fortunate to have a room in the back. So, our room was very quiet. My only complaint is about the breakfast room. It is way too small for the number of guests. We had to stand for sometime till a table freed up...then there was no one around to bus the table. Finally, we opened the kitchen door and asked for help. Now with a clean table, we were especially conscious of other folks waiting for a table. This is not a place to linger and enjoy a second cup of coffee. And, if you are interested in a full breakfast, you won't find it here. As advertised, a continental breakfast is offered. And, that's fine...if there is space to enjoy it.

Other than the breakfast situation, Porches is a lovely place in a busy city. And, the most important reason to stay is to visit MassMOCA which is right across the street.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back, away from the highway.

We spent two nights here in July 2014. We had room 26 in the SAGE building. This has a balcony and overlooks the back part of the hotel.

We enjoyed our stay, we liked the staff (very helpful) and the breakfast was excellent.

One thing we liked was their DVD library. We could borrow a DVD for free and they provided popcorn.

The breakfast is simple but tasty. The bread is locally made, the cheese is also local.

Make sure you ask to take a guided tour of the hotel. The history is very interesting.

Room Tip: They have lots of different types of rooms. Some large, some small, some with balconies etc. Please note that the steps to the second floor have a very short tread and riser, so be careful. Folks with big feet can easily trip.

It's not the fanciest place, but the Porches wins with cleanliness and comfort and over-the-top personal service. One favorite is the free popcorn. Another is the complimentary watermelon slices. But the stand-out on our latest visit was that they allowed me to plug in my electric car overnight! The swimming pool is always clean and with Mass MoCA a short walk away, there's no second choice for us in North Adams.
