“An Intimate Evening at the Theatre”

Academy of Performing Arts
Ranked #10 of 45 things to do in Orleans
Attraction details
Reviewed 2 July 2014

The Academy has attracted a number of students to its educational programs and some talented actors for its productions. The theater is small and "in the round" so there is a sense of intimacy for every production. This is particularly enjoyable for the musicals that are staged here with their dance routines by a decent-sized company. Cabaret was a full evening with four pretty good leads and a cadre of talented dancers The company and its director deserves a hand for their enthusiasm in this production. Tight seats can make it a long evening.

When vacationing or spending time in a beach community one great way to expand your beach experience is to go to summer theater. And the Academy of Performing Arts is one of the best. It is housed in an old theater building which now has air conditioning which it did not always have. It is a small venue so there are no bad seats. Its actors and actresses are all volunteers but don't let that fool you. This theater has for many years pumped out great theater year after year. We last saw Carousel and it was remarkable.

This is a great experience for children. They have a children's program but going to an evening show is a great time for children. Spending a warm summer evening at summer theater is a very special part of the Cape Cod experience. And then the following night you can go to an free Cape Cod Baseball League game. Orleans has the best field.

I have always wanted to see Les Miserables but never got the chance so I saw an ad in the local Cape Cod Times for a performance at the Academy of Performing Arts in Orleans that had been extended another week due to popular demand. The write up sounded awesome and I had been there before to see other performances that were great so I called and took an elder neighbor last night and we had a blast !!! The Academies Artistic Director Peter Earle directed this performance and truly did an OUTSTANDING JOB and should be commended for his efforts. No need to go to Broadway when you have a treasure like this on Cape Cod. The venue is quaint and adorable in an old white building up on the hill and you need to go upstairs to see the performance but if you are physically able it is well worth it. The theatre does not have a bad seat in it and the seats wrap around the stage for great viewing. They now have air conditioning and the performers are INCREDIBLE !!! They are all volunteers and they give it their all. This performance was truly THE BEST I have ever seen there and they have all been awesome !!! Parking is at a premium so get their early but if you have a chance DO NOT MISS THIS PERFORMANCE and theatre if you are on Cape Cod. You will not be disappointed and it's all for $24.00 !!!!! According to the program book the Academy does have plans to improve the parking and accessibility issues in the near future which will make it a great venue for everyone.

The cast was so talented, it could have been Broadway. We went on Sunday night and were so sad that the theatre wasn't full. There are no bad seats. We also saw Caberet there in June and loved it, but the voices in Les Miserables were even better. If you are in Orleans in the summer, don't miss this theatre experience!

Old, Old building--but we have taken the kids here many times to see musicals--Like South Pacific, Guys and Dolls, The Producers; etc. SMall theater upstairs and since they put in air conditioning it is much more enjoyable. If you want to share the American Musical Theater with your kids this is a safe bet
