We stopped here after a walk round Rock Harbour. The waitress was brilliant - friendly and chatty.
We didn't realise it was cash only so didn't have enough on us to sample the 'famous' lobster rolls (planned to come back for that but didn't bother). So we chose the chowder and the she-crab stew. The chowder was thin with an oily mix floating on it and the crab stew had a very strong herb flavouring - rather overpowering. Both were salty which we don't like.
Shame as the place definitely has character and it's fun to eat there.

Yes, we are two of those "dreaded locals" that seem to take a hit from the out of town folks who like to find fault with everything. We have been coming here for more years than I care to count. The food (I can highly recommend the scallop plate - $10.95), staff, atmosphere, value and just plain down home feeling is what brings us back numerous times every season and you can bring your own wine if like. We are happy to see the "Opening Soon" sign in the spring and sad to see them close in the late fall. Is it fancy - NO. Is it pretentious - NO. Is it a unique Cape Cod experience - YES. Don't be put off by the naysayers on this page. Give it a try.

The food is OK although we had much better in Orleans. I don't like to eat on paper plates and use plastic utensils when I'm paying $25 for dinner. The clam chowder was not good although the crab stew was very good. There are far better choices elsewhere.

I am amused by newphase's complaint about the service at Cap't Cass, for favoring the locals......especially since it came from a reviewer who lives in New York City where in many restaurants only the elite get to eat, while the rest of us can wait forever. I am a local-but unknown to the establishment - and have always found the staff doing the best they can to be friendly and welcoming. Does the reviewer have any idea what running a restaurant on Cape Cod is like in the summer? Packed with guests, owners slave away to get food on the table. They have little time to play elitist games (and, to be frank, if the people seated seconds before you were regular customers, they probably deserved some small consideration for their loyalty over the years.) So, come on back in the fall when all of us can breathe. As for Cap't Cass being like a clam shack..... since when is that a put-down? Unfortunately, these low key, unassuming spots have become few and far between. With their loss, a whole part of what makes Cape Cod special is gone forever. New York fancy Cap't is not, but with real cod and old fashioned chowder available what's not to like? (Oh, and if a restaurant admits to running out of scallops, there is a good chance that what they are serving is fresh.)

This is one of a dying breed of old New England family-run places. Unpretentious atmosphere, friendly service. Seems like it's been in the family for generations. If you're a demanding city type, go elsewhere. The menu is simple, mostly seafood of course. The fish sandwich has a double layer of fish, fried just right, too big to keep it all in the bread. There is one table by the window, grab it if you can for a sea breeze!
