Owner description: Hancock Shaker Village is a living history museum whose mission is to bring the Shaker story to life and preserve it for future generations. Called the "City of Peace" by the Shakers who lived here for 179 years until 1960, this community was the third of 19 major Shaker Villages located in New York, New England, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. There are 18 original historic buildings on this site. The staff and volunteers are dedicated to making the Village a center for reflection on living the principled life. The values that the Shakers embraced -- equality, pacifism, community, sustainability, responsible land stewardship, innovation, simplicity and quality in work -- resonate with us today. In addition to viewing the architecture, we have so many things to see including the farm and gardens, the animals, costumed interpreters, demonstrations of handicrafts like weaving, spinning, and blacksmithing, hiking and walking trails, the Discovery Room where kids can do hands-on activities, photo and art exhibitions, a cafe and picnic area. We have modern amenities and the village is handicapped accessible.

I really enjoyed my visit. The story of the Shakers is brought to life through the exhibits and buildings. Beautiful furnishings and the Shaker music and dance performance was excellent. This should appeal to any history buff.

This was an interesting and historical attraction on the story of the Shakers in America. The village contains many authenic buildings and items that pertained to this time in history. At the beginning was a short video that introduced you to the Shaker culture. You then could walk through the village at your own pace and read or listen to information about each building and its importance to the Shaker history. On the day that we attended, there were two special demonstrations that were extremely interesting. I would like had seen more demonstrations, but that could have been due to the time period that we visited this site.

This was a most interesting attraction. The village is fascinating and the story of the Shakers is one wihich I don't think many Americans have probably never hear about. We found it to be a great place to tour on your own with the audio units. It is well worth a visit.

Didn't know what to expect here, but really enjoyed the afternoon. These people were years ahead of most of society. I won't get into the quacky ideas of abstinence and such, but their ingenuity in finding easier more efficient ways of getting work done is remarkable. Certainly worth a visit. Authentic buildings that are well maintained. Living history and knowledgable guides.

If you love learning about history from an everyday perspective, take a tour at this Shaker Village. Learn how the Shakers used innovative technology in their workshops, what they ate, how they lived, and the songs they sang. The tour guides are fun and knowledgable and just enjoy imagining a different, communal way of life.
