“The best seafood in the area”
Reviewed 4 September 2013 via mobile

This place is excellent. We always stop in to pick up fresh seafood, and stay to have the chowder and delicious fried foods. Counter service and picnic tables; but it is in a seafood shop after all. Staff is always friendly and the wall decor is enough to keep you occupied while your food is cooking.

“Family favorite”
Reviewed 12 June 2013

This little place is located in a small mini mall off the main rt 3A. It is half seafood market and half restaurant with takeout. The menu is HUGE and they carry averything fresh. Prices are comparable to other places but the food it fresher here. Try the family special, it is enough to feed a family of 4 plus more. Very informal and friendly. Look slike a place all the locals would eat at.

“Still decent but not as good as in the past”
Reviewed 13 January 2013

Rock Bottom is the local fish market and clam shack restaurant in Cedarville, and has been a staple fixture of this southernmost village in Plymouth, locally owned and operated for 25 years. It is the kind of off-the-beaten-path hole-in-the-wall place one feels good about supporting. It is run by neighbors for neighbors year round, and the summer tourists who have discovered it return loyally every year.

I have been eating there for almost 20 years, in the distant past several times a month, but lately not quite so often. I am saddened to report that, over the past 5 years or so, there has been a noticeable decline in the quality of the cooked food items. In order to reduce costs, maximize profits, and still keep menu prices affordable, the owner has apparently instituted a number of cost-cutting measures that have resulted in a generally lower quality of many menu items. The fish and seafood in the market are still excellent and as fresh as ever, although retail prices have gone higher and higher in recent years. And that is the good news. The fall-off in the restaurant menu items is the bad news.

An unfortunate decision was apparently made to not change the cooking oil as frequently as before, with the predictable result that the deep-fried items can on some days be cooked in old oil that is long past its useful life. Such food is not only greasy and rancid be can also be really tough on the digestive system. I also suspect that cheaper breading mixes are being used than in the past, with the result that the excellent fried fish and shellfish items are compromised by poorer quality coatings.

Another sad issue is that, some time back, the use of fresh-cut whole potatoes for the french fries was discontinued, and truly horrible frozen processed "fries" that are borderline inedible were substituted. I would recommend that diners pass on the fries entirely and get another helping of the cole slaw, which is still made from scratch in house and is excellent.

Rock Bottom still serves up the best clam chowder recipe of any seafood restaurant of my acquaintance, and it is worth visiting if only for this fantastic dish alone. The kitchen staff still does a good job preparing the food, given what they have to work with. Unfortunately, many of the fried fish and seafood items are simply not as good as they used to be.

It is possible to fool the summer people who eat frozen fish most of the year, but we New England natives know our fish and seafood and take it seriously. Ten years ago, I would have given Rock Bottom five stars as a truly outstanding clam shack, but time and cost-cutting economy measures have taken their toll in more recent years. There are now a number of other clam shacks in the area that do it much better.

“Fresh fish market, made to order take-out or informal dining”
Reviewed 15 November 2012 via mobile

Dennis has been a Plymouth staple for years and I've been a loyal customer for over 10 years. Family and locally owned, with the best seafood around. Try the fish and chips or the clam chowder. The seating is limited and very informal, but you will appreciate eating the food fresh off the grille or out of the fryer. We all need to support these local gems. They also operate a catering business. Used them for a lobster and clam bake for a large number of business associates from across the country and Dennis got rave reviews for the clam bake. catering pricing was reasonable.
