“Avoid this hotel!”
Reviewed 26 October 2010

We were on a brief getaway. The first night was in Boston in an elegant, new genuine 4-star hotel for only $10 more than the John Carver. When we got to the John Carver, we were shocked by the overwhelming reek of mildew, the dingy, dated furnishings and the noisy air conditioner. We had to move the nightstand to plug in a medical appliance; clearly no one had cleaned behind the furniture for many years.
The only staff members we met came right up with a spray bottle of something after we complained of mildew and the non-functioning TV. Obviously, these "amenities" are part of the standard service. I've been in cheap old motels before, but I've never had to pay nearly $200 for the privilege of staying there.

This is a very old building that was obviously remodeled, but unfortunately they couldn't remove the midew smell everywhere. The room was beautifully decorated, but IT SMELLED terrible. We had a problem with our TV and even though the front desk told us the manager would be up shortly, he never came. We couldn't get on the internet either, so we called the front desk. They had to call us back after talking to their "I.T." person. It didn't fix the problem so we called again. We finally had to go down to the front desk to have them "look at our computer." After calling their "IT person" AGAIN, they finally got us online. THAT was very annoying. But what was even more annoying was the heating unit. There was no thermostat, so you had to try and find just the right setting for a comfortable temperature. No such luck. Either it was too hot or too chilly in the room. PLUS this unit was very noisy all night long and woke us up everytime it turned on. We were exhausted in the morning. We also had a large bug fly past our faces while watching TV. Then we noticed a large bug crawling up the wall.... that was it. We decided not to stay another night. This was obviously a hotel that "old people" like because we saw no one younger than 50 staying there. I guess old people can't smell the mildew, hear the heat register, or spot the bugs crawling up the walls. What a nightmare.

Stayed for a night and no problems at all. Front desk employees pleasant and helpful. Room was clean and quiet. Hotel was within walking distance of many good restaurants and the harbor area. The restaurant on site for breakfast was fine.

We stayed here during our tour of New England from the UK and this was our last hotel for two nights before flying home.
Very central for town with its shops and restaurants.
A couple of problems to start with is that there is no where outside the hotel for dinner unless you want Indian etc, they all seemed to shut up after lunch.
After an awful dinner and break fast the next day in the Hearth and Kettle ( get some new servers ) we had a lovely breakfast in town on our last day so I would advise that you eat outside the hotel.
A large coach party turned up while we were there which also made it very busy.
The bar shortchanged my husband with the drinks as they seemed to think what ever the note you give them minus your drinks that is there tip !!!
I think not and they tried this a few times so a bit rude if you asked me and it was also full of there staff on a night off with one girl thinking it was clever to swear her way through the evening-not what you would expect so we left.
The room was fine and clean but one little word of warning for parking in America.
We have been many times but have never parked on a meter before so we came back to our car one hour early to find we had a ticket.
Apparently you cannot park in the opposite way to the way the traffic is going.
$ 15 fine and now we are home we are waiting for the appeal to come through.
I would not stay here again for the simple fact that the rooms are fine butv the amentiies are not and the staff need a few leassons on how to treat there visitors.

My husband and I stayed here and we got the package deal. That included a Ghost tour and Corn Maze. We enjoyed the Ghost tour very much! It is def. worth it!!!
The hotel itself is nice. Very clean! Rooms were nice but not updated. Bed was okay, BRING YOUR OWN PILLOW!!! The pillows stink very flat. Cable tv, and an AWESOM pool!!! Gift shop is small only gift items, the location is GREAT, right in the center of town. Not that noisy. We did not have a chance to eat at the restaurant so I cannot comment on that.
The place was booked solid! So people must like it. Yes, I would reccommend to a friend and YES i I would go again!

Poor service. Dingy rooms. Too pricey for quality. Cheap chain hotels are nicer than this place! Cold hot tub, room doors left open by maintenance with our belongings in it, locked out of room twice because lock was broken, had to have door fixed 2x's and we only stayed 2 nights! Day and night staff never communicated problems. Horrible experience. Was contacted once by a manager via email asking to talk with me, gave him a time to call and he never called. Terrible customer service and hotel! Would never recommend it or stay there again.

I am a local and had never stayed at the John Carver Inn before, only had eaten at he Hearth and Kettle restaurant. I am glad I got the chance to stay here. Rooms were clean, staff was friendly and you cannot beat the loaction of this hotel. We walked everywhere- restaurants, bars, shops, etc... Its an old building so you feel like you are in someones home as opposed to hotel. I would most definitely stay here again.
