We have been hearing such good reviews of Ross' Grill from friends that we decided to go there on a nice July evening. We made reservations and were welcomed upon arrival and seated at a table with a beautiful view of the harbor. A friendly server brought us water and a few pieces of slightly warm bread with a peppery olive oil dipping sauce. After perusing the extensive menu and hearing a detailed explanation of the specials, we ordered a bottle of wine, an appetizer of fried calamari and entrees of fried cod and brick chicken. Our calamari was sub par, but not horrible. It was served with a hot, delicious dipping sauce. The calamari was cut into very large rings and was very, very chewy. Not a great start. My cod was served over a large mountain of mashed potatoes and with wilted spinach. The cod was chewy and overcooked and not flavorful. My partner's brick chicken fared better: it was flavorful and juicy but was also served over a giant mound of mashed potatoes. We were disappointed in the meal, considering the high praise from our friends. The server was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. However, service is only part of an enjoyable restaurant experience. We are in town for the summer and probably will not bother returning to Ross' Grill anytime soon as there are better options in this wonderful town. I should add that prices are in line with other similar Provincetown restaurants.
