We selected the Courtyard over another local hotel with spotty ratings thinking that Marriott offers pretty standard stuff. Ah ha, but standards change. The big surprise was that standard breakfast setup had been replaced by their new "bistro". Antennae immediately went up as bistro is often used when one is trying to impress with words, not necessarily results.
The room was fine and they have a strict noise policy, which was nice given that an all-night wedding celebration was in progress.
The surprise, though, was in the morning. Turns out the bistro is being run by Starbucks. Yeah, the same guys that have you waiting in line for 15 minutes to get a cup of coffee while the serve up hand-crafted latte, mocha, grandee calorie-fests to everybody else.
Don't get me wrong. It's a very pretty bistro with design elements that you'd like to take home. And has that soothing Starbucks feel. But whereas before breakfast was self-serve and maybe an omelet if you had a few more minutes, now it's all sit-down table service.
When you're at the airport and the Starbucks line is stretching gate-to-gate, you always have the option to find another coffee shop close by. But now they have you captive--to practice their we-make-you-wait skills until the cows come home.
We ordered two oatmeals and two orders of eggs. One oatmeal shows up in about five minutes. Ten minutes later they're giving someone else oatmeal. We inquired about their strange queuing model and that finally get our second oatmeal to show up. Then the eggs dribble in. We got to see Murray finish off Federer for the Gold but how often is that going to happen?
Oh, and did I mention that this all seemed like it cost about 50% more than before. (Or did it use to be free? I forget.) And there's no more pancakes and waffles. Too declasse. Just fancy French toast.
The staff tells me that the plan is to roll these slo-mo affairs out to the entire chain. Great.
So all I'm saying is don't schedule any morning meetings if you're going to be staying at a Courtyard in the future. And forget the pancakes or the thought of loading up your own oatmeal toppings. Just sit down and enjoy the bistro.
