“Cozy and Charming B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 September 2012

My husband and I participated as singers in the Berkshire Choral Festival this summer, and had the privilege of staying in the lovely Staveleigh House nearby. In addition to a great experience at the Festival, our whole week wouldn't have been the same without our cozy "home away from home." Staveleigh House is located on a quiet section of Rt 7, famous for its many antique shops. As West Coast people visiting the Berkshires for the first time, we couldn't have been happier with our choice of the Staveleigh House B&B.

Ali & Harry are gracious innkeepers, ready to help with any special requests. Ali's breakfasts are incredible --- a very special and delicious gourmet feast each morning, served in the beautiful dining room. She was so accomodating to our unique needs to have breakfast earlier in order to make it to our rehearsals on time, and helped us start the day with a smile. My husband wanted to find a good place to run in the mornings, and Harry & Ali helped him figure out a good loop nearby that became his daily run. We also had never been to Tanglewood, so Ali loaned us lawn chairs, a blanket, and an insulated picnic basket for all our picnic needs at the concert. She definitely went above and beyond!

We loved the historic inn with its authentic rooms and beautiful gardens. I wish we could grow flowers like she does! Our room was air-conditioned and so pretty, and after long hours of rehearsing, such a welcoming place to come home to. We stayed for a whole week, and had a hard time saying good-bye.

The Staveleigh House is also a great home base to enjoy the Berkshires. We drove down route 7 into Connecticut to visit a winery, and drove the other way on route 7 to explore Great Barrington, Stockbridge, and Lenox. We were very happy with the location and how easy it was to explore other towns in the Berkshires.

We highly recommend Staveleigh House and hope to return someday. Ali and Harry are special people, and you will feel welcome from the moment they greet you!

Room Tip: We loved the fresh and sunny room #1 at the front of the house.

On Labor Day, through a garden crowded with flowers, we drove up to Staveleigh House, and received such a warm welcome that we felt at home right away. The bed was soft and warm, the bathroom pretty, with a really strong shower. The living room was furnished with fascinating antiques and a collection of locally themed or produced books, some of them beautiful art books. We sat on the porch in the evening talking to other guests to whom we had been introduced by Ali, our hostess, listening to the crickets and Ali and Harry's miniature horses and goats moving around in their corral. When the time came to leave we really didn't want to go, wishing that we could have another breakfast of creamy blueberry french toast....

[a note on my ratings of value, location and rooms - prices at Staveleigh House are right in line with local B&Bs, but these are generally high by comparison with other parts of MA. Once you are inside the house, you forget that it is situated on a major road, Route 7. The rooms are lovely, and comfortable, but not utterly luxurious: more of a "shabby chic" vibe.]

Room Tip: We liked how room seven had one door to the living and dining rooms and one to the porch: we are sen...

The owners are fantastic. Live on the property. You are treated like family. Rooms are nice. House is great. Try the mint ice tea and the fresh gingerbread cookies. Great gardens. Wonderful animals. This place is what a B&B should be. Don't change a thing. Perfect.

Room Tip: They are all good. Call in advance. Ali is wonderful to work with.a

My husband and I are repeat visitors to Ali's and Harry's Bed and Breakfast.
We would not consider staying elsewhere in the Berkshires. We love to see their beautiful gardens, and this beauty is enjoyed inside as well with the numerous vases of pretty flowers throughout.
It is so warm and charming from the moment we enter, and Ali's accommodating and relaxed demeanor adds to her sincere wish to make her quests feel very welcome.
We love to visit her animals too - tall and small. They are so adorable, and all receive TLC galore from Ali and Harry.
The quest rooms come in all sizes, are very attractively decorated, comfortable and quiet. Ali's sitting room is open to all guests, and if weather permits, outside space is available for anyone who might wish to sit and sip.
On our last visit to Ali's this Summer, we brought my two sisters who were visiting from Ireland. They loved everything about Ali's Bed and Breakfast, and very much enjoyed the delicious breakfasts. Ali's hen provided the fresh eggs, and fresh fruit and vegetables from her garden complemented each breakfast. Ali would always offer an alternative to her morning menu - just in case a guest had a preference.
We always look forward to revisiting our favorite place.

My wife and I stayed here for a few days of R&R in the Berkshires -- which I continue to recommend as a place to get away to. This place was an almost perfect combination of beauty, charm, hospitality, history, and good food -- in other words, just the place at which a couple would want to spend time.

Ali could hardly have been a more gracious and helpful host -- every interaction was a friendly one, every request was graciously handled, and all the food was cooked and presented to near-perfection. For example, not only did she allow us to use the dining area to eat our take-out pizza (try THAT at some motels!!), but she brought out plates, silverware, and napkins!

All seven rooms described in their URL are on the second floor, and there is no elevator -- no surprise for a home built in 1818. Parking is free and on-site. The house is near a railroad that causes the walls to rattle as it passes by, but (fortunately) this does not happen often. Despite being on a major road through the town, the place was refreshingly quiet. As Sheffield is not a large town, there is not a great deal nearby, but that fact is an attraction for us.

All bedrooms are small, but beautifully decorated with charming furniture. All have a user-controlled AC unit and a wonderfully comfy terry-cloth robe. None have a phone, and only some have a full, private bath. I did not notice any refrigerators in any room, but Ali stated we could use the house fridge for anything we needed to keep cool. Their URL states that all rooms have cable TV and hair dryers, and "some" have DVD players. Our Room #4 had neither of the latter two, and cable TV existed only in Room #1 -- the only room without a flat panel TV. Ali stated that lightning had knocked out cable in the house. Thus, we had only four channels to watch -- all local -- and the video was a bit blurry. Our room was definitely clean and well-maintained.

The wi-fi worked fine the entire time we were there. However, I noted only one room had a desk -- thus you will find out why they are called "lap" tops. In addition, our Room #4 had only one three-prong plug (which our laptop requires) available for our use, and it was in the bathroom.

I did not notice any of the rooms having a way to lock your door after you left the room. Thus, if you are worried about others having access to your belongings while you are enjoying the area, you will have to take those items with you.

The place is very friendly to pets and children. In addition to Ali's knowledge, it has a wide variety of reading material to help you decide what to see and where to go. Smoking is banned indoors. You can relax in the common area next to the dining room, or outside in the shaded area next to the barn. The gardens are truly wonderful to look at, and the farm animals not only add to the rural setting but provide eggs just hours old when you eat them.

The breakfasts are to die for -- Ali can cook for a week without any repetition or let-up in quality. Even the utensils were wonderful to see. The stated time to eat breakfast is 8-10, but she can start at an earlier time if you request it. In addition, if you have special dietary requests, she can most definitely accommodate you as well.

For a couple or a family wanting a home away from home while in the Berkshires, this place would be hard to beat.

The minute you walk into Staveleigh House, you feel that you are in a special place. You will know immediately what is special for Ali and Harry: every manner of animal, each one rescued and wonderfully cared for in the back lot (with a cat or two lying in the sun and a King Charles spaniel in the parlor), and flowers galore--zinnias, flox, sunflowers, marigolds, among them. Ali and Harry are people with strong values and open hearts. Ali's cooking has been written about so much that there is little point in mentioning it again. I'll just add that, despite my lifelong gluten intolerance, Ali made me special breakfasts every day, the most mouthwatering dish being her blueberry muffins. As if that wasn't enough, on our last morning after the usual big breakfast she presented us with a big plastic bag full of muffins and waffles--so that we wouldn't starve to death on the way home.

The reason we chose the town of Sheffield was that it isn't far from Lenox, specificallyTanglewood, where we wanted to attend a few concerts, but it wasn't too near either--the B and Bs and inns close to Tanglewood can be quite costly. Though the drive to the music festival was longish and rather difficult at night, we wouldn't have traded Staveleigh for the most splendid inn or B and B in Lenox.

For those who want the most spiffy, spanking new quarters with huge bathrooms and nary a blemish on the walls, Staveleigh is probably not the best choice. (The beds are wonderful.) But for us, Steveleigh is a well-lived in, well-loved home, and we cherished the opportunity to be part of that home for four lovely days. We will return.

We absolutely LOVED our stay at Staveleigh. Everything was perfect, including the beautiful old house, our large bedroom, lovely landscaping, and delicious breakfast. I am a stickler for cleanliness and your establishment gets an A Plus. Your small farm area was definitely a highlight. Being raised on a farm, I have a true love for all kinds of animals, and you
covered the bases with the interesting variety of pets. You were so sweet to let us play with them. By the way, Clementine the donkey is a hoot. Edgar is so loveable, the way he climbed up the fence to greet me. I have added a picture of the two of us.
Sheffield is such a lovely quaint town, and we look forward to staying with you again and expoloring the beautiful Berkshires.
