Captain Farris House Bed & Breakfast
Certificate of Excellence

My husband and I recently stayed at the Captain Farris House for a much needed vacation. We were so happy to see such a pretty house with beautiful gardens! Our room, Aunt Liddy's Room, was perfect for us and very comfortable. Michael and Nancy gave us some GREAT restaurant suggestions, and they have all kinds of info on what to do and where to go in the area. The inn is a very short drive to the beaches- you could easily bike it. The location is also convenient to the ferry to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. The rest of the staff couldn't be friendlier, everyone made us feel very comfortable. The breakfasts were great too, especially the oatmeal pancakes - Nancy even gave me her recipe! All in all, it was the perfect place for our Cape Cod vacation. Karen & David, Warwick, NY

My husband and I recently visited the Captian Farris House Inn from June 24-27th. Our stay at the Inn was simply wonderful. From the moment we arrived we were so pleased with the hosptiality of Nancy & Michael. Our room - Aunt Lidy's was a true romantic hideaway, complete with Fireplace and Terrace. The Inn offered so many little extras like a complete video library and microwave popcorn to go with it, perfect way to spend a rainy night in Cape Cod. Breakfast was an expierence in itself, a delicable three course meal served every morning with a warm greeting.

Captian Farris House is by far the best Bed & Breakfast we have stayed at. Thanks Nancy & Michael for a Wonderful Stay!!

My husband and I just spent 4 wonderful days at The Captain Farris House, and it is definately a place that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a relaxing, romantic inn on the Cape. It is only a short drive to pick up the Ferry to MV or Nantucket or to explore the outstanding boutiques in the center of Chatham and the beach is just minutes in the car!! Michael and Nancy are exceptional hosts and it is obvious that they love what they are doing by the care they take in making your stay an enjoyable one. The breakfasts they prepare each morning are outstanding, with a presentation that makes one feel so special. Our room was perfect with a spacious bathroom, along with a very nice sitting area. The grounds had beautiful gardens with many benches and chairs to enjoy the area. The amenities are more than we have received at other places and at a perfect price!! We can't wait to return - hopefully with friends. Thank you Nancy & Michael for making our stay so perfect.

We recently stayed 3 nights in room #8, Russell’s Hideaway, while celebrating our 5th anniversary. The room seemed stuffy and warm upon arrival, so we called to request a fan. It felt like our request was a bother, but a fan was brought to us immediately. The room temperature was better until we had to shut the slider door to go to bed, and then quickly became warm and stuffy again, even with the fan.

The next morning we went down to breakfast early to ask them to install the window A/C unit since we were uncomfortable during the night. Nancy quickly replied “Absolutely not. Air is not needed in May.” I was surprised at how rudely she responded. I reminded her that their website states A/C is individually controlled in each room, and that we would not have booked without air. Nancy and Michael said they would discuss our options and let us know after breakfast. Not exactly accommodating hosts! Anyway, 10 minutes later Michael said that the air would be installed that day while we were out. After that confrontation I thought things would be awkward, but they were both pleasant the rest of our stay.

As mentioned in other reviews, breakfast is served at individual tables in either the courtyard or formal dining room. Breakfast was fine, but I wouldn’t say “delicious” as I’ve read in other reviews. Maybe that’s because we’re not big fans of egg dishes, and she served eggs 2 of our 3 days. The best part of breakfast was the fresh fruit and the homemade baked good, which was excellent each day.

Overall we had an ok stay, but definitely not the great getaway we had hoped for. We would not stay here again. The hosts are generally pleasant, but not especially friendly or welcoming, and they do not respond well to special requests!

Pros: The house, common areas, and grounds are beautiful! We had a nice room that included a sun porch, sofa, chair w/ottoman, fireplace, king bed (with new, firm mattress) and large bathroom with great bath products. Once the air was installed we were very comfortable!!

Cons: A/C may not be installed during spring or fall. Be sure to ask when you book your room! Even though it was only 50 degrees at night, our upstairs room was always well above 70 degrees!

Suggestions: Change your website to specify when A/C is available in the rooms, so others do not have to make a special request. Also, display the breakfast menu the night before … better yet, offer a choice between two main entrees!

Management response:Responded 2 June 2006

We are aware that in the hospitality industry we cannot please everyone. We also realize how one person can “view” a situation totally different from another. We certainly do our best to make our guests feel special and we are honored that they chose The Captain Farris House as their place to visit. We put our air conditioner units in each room on Memorial Day weekend. Generally they are not used until the end of June as Cape Cod is always cool and an open window does fine. During the time these guests stayed with us it was 50 degrees at night and low 60's during the day. Not yet time for an air conditioner. They did not want to open a window so we did put the air conditioner in for them.

We couldn't have asked for more. We renewed our wedding vows under the gazebo in the beautifully manicured garden. The event itself was as special as the first time. Our hosts, Michael and Nancy, made the entire event and our week long stay, an occasion not to be forgotten. The ambiance of the Inn with its fine furnishings, fragrant scents, soft music, flowers and more, have all the makings of a romantic getaway. Every morning we were treated to a three course gourmet breaksfast served to us in the courtyard or the formal dining room, the setting of our choice. We absolutely would not hesitate to go back again!

Maybe we are partial to the host and hostess because they are such good friends, but the Captain Farris house is everything I thought it would be. Our room had a great balcony overlooking the gardens in the back, there was even a little bird who made a nest for her babies in the floral wreath on the door. If that does not say that it's a quiet and relaxing place to stay, I dont know what would! Our stay was great. It was just the overnight get away we needed. It was quiet and clean very relaxing. The area dining was was very good as well. Just a short little walk around the corner.
In the morning we had a great breakfast of fruit, warm custard and french toast. Very Good! Then we were off to the antique store to complete our weekend retreat.
I highly recommend the place.
