I had not heard of Naumkeag but the inkeeper at 1862 Season on Main recommended it and we just loved it, great view, knowledgeable staff, worth the trip.

This vacation "cottage", built by the Choate family, is fascinating in a variety of ways. There is the historical aspect of the family and the era they lived in, the unique architectural features of the house itself, and the unbelievably beautiful gardens and grounds. The Trustees of Reservations have done a first rate job with the restoration. This was my second time visiting and both times our guide was very interesting and knowledgeable. Naumkeag is well worth a visit.

We arrived just in time to take a garden tour with an incredibly knowledgeable guide. These gardens are not the typical variety; they are more architectural than flower-focused. I would not have appreciated or understood them had I not been on the tour. He got us back to the house in time for a tour of the house itself with another terrific guide. Again, we learned a lot and loved the opportunity to see such beautiful places in the process of restoration. Time well spent.

The tour here was well worth it. The guides really share the history and tell the stories in a delightful presentation.

The house and the history of the Choates is interesting, and we loved the old style of the staircases, fireplaces, furniture and the design of the house. Our tour guide was great. The real gem, though, is the garden. Exquisite and well-kept. The real heroes of this attractions are the grounds-keepers. The garden itself, with the oriental/european/colonial flavors is a real treat, not to even mention the sheer size of it. I am normally not into things like this, but this garden was pretty incredible.
