“A unique and special place”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

This ancient hotel exudes charm with its art and artifacts. From floral wall paper to gothic tracery graced by Victorian antiques and old books, this place is caviar to a nostalgia buff. The young staff is helpful and enthusiastic. The restaurant is good and has locally grown products. The town has the Norman Rockwell Museum. Come here for a few days and it is like traveling back in time. Four poster beds are comfortable and you can still watch cable TV and get wifi.

Room Tip: The suites cost more but are very nice. Avoid noisy rooms on the first floor.

Stayed there in June 2014. Loved the history, the staff was very forthcoming with stories of the Inn, and the town. Local shops were very quaint and different. Inn dining is expensive, opted for a local diner instead.

We always wanted to see James Taylor at Tanglewood, and thought staying at the Red Lion would be perfect. It was a busy weekend (Fourth of July) so we made reservations months in advance. Unfortunately, I made them for June 3 instead of July 3. The desk people were understanding and great to us. They found an extra room in the O'Brien House - beautiful, clean and comfortable. They even delivered a complementary bottle of wine (imagine if we showed up on the correct date next time). The front porch is a great place to people watch, and shops/restaurants are close by.

The Red Lion Inn once had a wonderful reputation for quality and service. Our experience wwith soiled bed sheets, ( looked like a blood stain)and staffs inability to accept responsibility for correcting the problem changed our perception of the Inn.

Room Tip: Check the bed linens upon entering the room.

My mother and I stayed here for the first time at Christmas time. We loved our weekend away! The town is so quaint and the people were friendly. We did all of the Christmas activities including the Norman Rockwell painting reenactment. We ate at the inn one night and enjoyed it but it's a splurge. We stayed in one of the annex buildings-it was yellow with a fireplace in the great room- can't remember the name. Our king bed was very comfortable and they had nice shower products. The room was spacious and quiet. We were able to walk downtown whenever we wanted. We borrowed DVDs from the main house and had a cozy night in one night. I'm not sure how much there is to do in the hotter months, but the Christmas weekend is not to be missed!

I've never stayed here, but every year, we meet friends for dinner here. Because the Red Lion is such a historic hotel, I'd always associated it with stodgy food, but this is far from the case. The menu is varied, and can accommodate vegetarians and fish eaters and meat eaters alike. The service is attentive but not intrusive. The wine was excellent and reasonably priced. I highly recommend the dining room.
