Martha's Vineyard Family Campground
Reviewed 7 July 2009

We have traveled with the kids to 4 star hotels before and my two oldest (ages 9 and 12) thought this was one of the best places they have been on vacation. The staff was friendly and there is lots to do. The cabin was very clean, but the grill lacked propane when we arrived and the nice staff quickly resolved it. There is a wide variety of people in the cabins and it can get a little loud, at night but hey, isn't that what camping is about...having a little fun?? You have to have a casual, laid back attitude or else you may find the college kids having a lot of fun at night annoying. We were all there once so we chose to not let it bother us. My two year old absolutely loved the playground...it is just perfect for the young ones. My 9 and 12 year old loved biking around the grounds and we even found a dirt trail behind the camp grounds to go on, which was a great adventure. My 12 year old loved the pick up baseball and kickball games that took place that were supervised by very nice parents. There was also a basketball hoop and game room (which we didn't use). The best part was sitting around a campfire and just chillin' after a long day in town or at the beach.

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful five day getaway in one of the one room cabins. We found the staff to be gracious, helpful and very friendly - including the "Mall Cop" !

As a long time camping couple, we greatly appreciated the enforcement of very fair and reasonable rules which guarantee that everyone will enjoy their island stay.

I encourage irresponsible tourists to stay home. This is not a place for heavy partying, disruptive noises or inappropriate activities.

The grounds are meticulously maintained, the rest rooms clean and the cabins spotless. If you can't find something you think you need in the store, you probably can live without it.

A family camped here can be assured that they will enjoy a safe, fun and memorable vacation experience. - close to everything and reasonably priced considering other rental options.

This was our first camping experience and It was great. The staff was great the minute we arrived. Bathrooms and showers were clean. The other campers around us were also nice. There is a small playground for the little ones to play. Overall, the experience was great and looking forward to going back this summer!

Looking to go to Martha's Vineyard for the first time, my husband and I considered all ridiculously overpriced options before deciding that the cost-savings of the campground might be worth it. Honestly, it was! Is this the best campground I've ever stayed at? Not by a long shot - the inside bathrooms were gross the entire length of our stay (4 days)! The outside showers, however, were clean fo what they were, the water was fine, and there were rarely lines. The site was fine and the place was generally safe and other campers generally friendly. As for the attitude of the owners, I have to admit that, as a couple, we stayed at the far end of the campground in the "quiet" area and had no contact with anyone other than the polite exchange students at the desk. I will say that I saw little of the restrictions in action at our distant end of the sprawling site, however - we had 2 sites of college students across from us who partied until 1 or 2am one night, and on our last night, they came back from somewhere very drunk and loudly decided to go "skunk-hunting" from 3 to 3:30 in the morning when my husband finally yelled at them because they had chased a skunk up against our tent! We couldn't get over the fact that we were the only ones who seemed bothered (not the management, not the other campers!) In short, we used the campsite as just a place to sleep to save some bucks. It was great for that!

There was good and bad about the campground. The store is well stocked and manned by overseas college students. There i is a lady and her brother as the owners. She is nice and quiet while he is not one any one would want to deal with. He's harsh with both adults, kids, and staff. I had seen him yelling at one person for ahving a bike rack on a truck in the overflow lot, yet a few days later another truck was allowed to leave theirs on. Quiet time at 11 is semi-enforced. When a cabin's grill wasn't working the man told the camper you get what you get. Also during unloading a camper was told only 1 vehicle per site. The man was very rude. The cabins were clean, the grounds nicely kept, yet the outdoor showers didn't want to stay on and 1 was needing fixed and didn't get fixed during my entire stay. The play area, however is kept in good order. The only other thing is the hefty $15 day fee for extra vehicles which can add up.

This campground is the only show in town on Martha's Vineyard and is a tough place to stay unless you are a single adult couple with no kids. The facility is fairly well kept and we had no problems with the sites (water and electric at the sites) but there are very strict rules about fires and noise after 10 pm. A fire is a hard thing to put a timer on and just stressful dealing with their time constraint. Kids seem to be embraced while riding around or on the swing set but plenty of campers got hollered at and bothered for being too loud, or too rambunctious. We witnessed two groups of campers to get tossed out of the place for noise complaints and there was lots of yelling by both the campers and the staff who were not afraid to scream and shout back and fourth when problems arose. This happened throughout the campground. Not an easy place to get kicked out of I imagine being an island where you have to book hotels months in advance which leaves you sleeping on the street. Overall our sleeping went well at the campground as a young couple but the staff put on an embarrassing display of yelling at other groups of young adult campers. In a few words: Stressful, won't go back.

This is a nice campground that is ruined be over zealous owners. They are constantly hollering at kids to be quiet before 8am and telling adults to put out campfires and lights at 10pm. No fires before 8am or after 10pm and the owner comes along with a bucket of water and pours it on each fire that is over the time. They patrol around in golf carts warning campers of the rules and trying to intimidate. They make the camping experience more like prison camp. The ego of the owner is allowed to destroy a nice campground because it is the only one on the island. If you can stay anywhere else please do yourself and family a favor and do so. Camping is supposed to be fun! Don't let this mall cop want-a-bee wreck your stay on this beautiful island!
