“A perfect escape from the hustle of New York City”
Reviewed 28 June 2013

Martha's Vineyard is a great place to visit, it is very relaxing and has a pace about it that makes you slow down and smell the roses. The 1720 House helps with this. I had the Blue Room booked at $175.00 per night. I wasn't able to get to Martha's Vineyard till 10.30 p.m from New York, I advised Abbey of this and there was no issue as she said that she would leave the key and directions to my room at the front door. The room was huge and homely and the queen bed very comfortable for a good night sleep. I had to share a bathroom with the Brown Room, but at no time was there any hassles with this, it felt like a private bathroom.

The 1720 House oozes charm with its beautiful interior and gardens. This is topped off with the house showing its age with the slight dip in the stairs has you go up to your bedroom and as you walk around.

The 1720 House is just up the street from the Falmouth Ferry Terminal, a 5 minute walk. If you are coming from New York you will have to get a taxis of which there are many when you arrive at Oak Bluff. The taxis ride cost $10.00.

On getting up for breakfast (08.30-09.30) you are met with a selection of cereals, breads, fresh fruits, yogurts. There is a great breakfast table or if the weather is fine you can have your breakfast outside in the garden. The New York Times or the Boston Globe are there for your reading. It can take time after this to get motivated to leave for the day's activities as it is very tempting to relax in the garden and enjoy the quiet.

Getting around Martha's Vineyard without a car is easy with many places renting bicycles, and mopeds. If these modes of travel don't suit there is a great bus service which can get you from one side of the island to the other.

Things to do in Vineyard Haven

-walk to the light house approx 2 miles from 1720 house
-walk around town
-go for a tallship sail with Black dog
-have a great meal at the Black Dog Tavern.

If you want a very nice and comfortable bed, a very nice breakfast and a great environment I recommend the 1720 House. I nearly forgot there is a nice afternoon tea left out for your enjoyment.

I made a last minute trip to Martha's Vineyard and choose to stay again at the 1720 House because of how wonderful it was last time. Sadly Abby was away for the weekend and I missed chatting with her. The staff she had their watching the place where very helpful. It was reassuring to know that even when away, Abby took the time to make sure that we had people their who would take care of us and make sure we had everything we needed. I cant wait to come back and stay again. Thank you 1720 House!!!!

Room Tip: Try and get the Lincoln Room if you can!!!!

We had friends come to visit Martha's Vineyard and they booked at the 1720 House and loved it! The location in Vineyard Haven was fantastic and they loved that they could walk everywhere. Quiet, clean and a super friendly staff rounded out their wonderful experience. We will be sending all our visitors to the 1720 House from now on!

My boyfriend and I stayed at the 1720 House during our very first visit to Martha's Vineyard recently and were very pleased with the experience. The common areas of the house are incredibly cozy and welcoming and our room (the Blue Room) was small but very cozy, very clean, and had some nice views of the beautiful mature trees in the front yard. The Inn was conveniently close to the ferry and to the inter-island buses and our fellow guests were mostly lovely young couples. We would definitely stay again!

I travel frequently to Martha's Vineyard and always stay at 1720 House. It's 5 minutes from the ferry, downtown Vineyard Haven and a cute little park right on the water. Abby Hirsch the owner, is a New Yorker turned inn owner, and an author and journalist to boot. She's a hoot and knows what's happening on the island, both in the papers and behind the scenes. Plus there's the oldest tree on the island right in the backyard just outside of the 'porch room', one of the common areas.

The staff is always great, the place is tidy and it's a home away from home.

Abby and Cheryle were the two most welcoming hosts I think we've experienced on our travels. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel at home, and it was altogether a great few days on the Vineyard. The room was well kitted-out and the bed was comfortable. Great breakfast in the morning, and Abby and Cheryle were full of recommendations for places to eat later in the day. We would definitely come here again.
