“A Not-to-Be-Missed Bass River Scenic Tour”

Starfish Bass River Cruises
Reviewed 18 September 2013

A great tour on the Bass River to its mouth. Lovely houses and summer cottages you could never see from the road, and stories and histories for each of them. Many birds along the way and cormorants fishing. This was my second tour with Starfish, and it was just as enjoyable and interesting the second time. It is a leisurely tour of a very beautiful part of the Cape that should be on your itinerary if you are on a visit to Cape Cod.

So the staff seemed nice and knowledgeable when telling us how to kayak around, which ways to go, etc. They did mention that the tide/current were coming in and we'd be paddling against them for the way out, but they failed to mention how strong it was, and how impossible it would make it to paddle and get anywhere. In our 2 person kayak, we hardly made it halfway down the suggested route in 40 minutes, argued the whole time about going in a straight line, keeping away from the larger boats (when the current was pushing us around), etc. It was more difficult than any kayaking I have done before. The river is more like an estuary, with the choppiness of the ocean. I wish we had made it to the end, it looked pretty on the map. In the end, we didn't even kayak for the full 1.5 hours (minimum rental time choice for payments) because we were exhausted and getting cranky.
Also, we got pretty soaked, so wear a bathing suit or something that can get wet.

This Bass River cruise is definitely for relaxation only. And that is what you get. Very nice, calm scenic cruise, especially when the sun sets in late August around 7ish. BEAUTIFUL! It was difficult to hear the "skipper" above the engine noise and the fact that he spoke rapidly. But, all in all, it was a fun and restful close to our busy day.

I have lived in West Dennis for the past 21 summers and finally, after all these years, decided to take a friend of mine from Hawaii on the Starfish Cruise. Loved it and found it very informative. It was a beautiful day and there was a breeze coming off the water which was greatly appreciated during one of our heat waves. Cocktails, beer and wine are available and you are allowed to bring snacks on board. I have recommended this activity to my neighbors when they are looking to entertain their company.

We were severely disappointed with this tour as the two on board guides were reading from a script, and there shouldn't be anything wrong with that, but they were both monotonous and unintelligible and sounded as if they had no interest in what they were saying and that wasn't surprising as the spiel consisted almost entirely of who lived where and how much was paid for a property. If one stopped listening and just admired the rather beautiful riverside houses and looked at the wildlife then this would be a vast improvement. There is so much of interest on the Cape and this trip is not worth the time.
