“very caring and community involved owners”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2013

I eat here often. I love the steamed with olive oil dishes on the light menu. Kenny is a great waiter as is the other employees. What I am most impressed with is their community involvement and spirit.I will always frequent this restaurant for all of the above reasons. Thank you!

“Good night out, food only fair”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2013

Joined some pals for some Chinese appetizers and drinks: all in all a good night. We hung out at the bar and the bartender was very attentive and personable. Drinks and snacks were delivered promptly. Prices were reasonable. The potion size on the appetizers was good, but the flavors and taste were blah: bone in spareribs were dry, tasteless and stringy and the wings were overcooked and dry. Notable exceptions: Beef Teriyaki & scallion pancakes were yummy.

The bar quickly filled up and then the Karaoke began. Usually that is my signal to leave, but actually most performers were pretty good and the sound system was well managed so the music did not overpower the room. We could still chat while listening to the music.

“what happened to Fresh Mushrooms?”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 April 2013

the Cathay Center in Weymouth has been a staple of the community for decades.

This review is being written in April 2013.

The restaurant is under new management and they have changed a lot. No more fresh mushrooms.... from a can now. The bean sprouts are gross. The egg rolls are different... too dry and not as much filling as they used to have.

the staple dishes that were well known for years are now made with less expensive ingredients... THAT CHANGES THE GREAT TASTE TO BLA YUK

the new management wants to do well but I don't think the lady who runs it now knows a lot about running an existing business that has (had) an excellent reputation for great food.
YOU DON'T MAKE CHANGES It isn't too late go back to the way it was.

Best Chinese food around with huge helpings. Always a great buffet on Sundays, take the family, everyone can make a choice. Mixed drinks are great & reasonable.

“Disgusting!!!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2012

We were frequent visitors to Cathay and had noticed a gradual decline in the quality of the food and went less frequently as a result. Like other people we ordered chinese for Xmas eve and ordered the biggest family meal package offered. Burnt blackened chicken wings egg rolls with burn holes in them burnt crab rangoons chicken fingers spent too long in the fryolator pork strips that were all gristle-you get the picture. This order should have never left the kitchen and it was nicely packed up in a metal caterers tray so there would be no detection until we got home. It is pretty sad when you spend $60 on food and the best items you bring home are the duck and soy sauce. The Cathay will never miss our business as whenever we've gone there is always a large contingent at the bar but often only empty tables in the restaurant. That in itself should be a warning to all that go in. So as a result of this experience we will not return even though we go past it on our way home. Make the effort to drive a little further down 3A to the Ocean Kai.
