The 1896 House Country Inn - Brookside & Pondside
Ranked #10 of 13 Hotels in Williamstown
Reviewed 20 October 2009

At first glance, it was not exactly what we had in mind. We were looking for more of a bed & breakfast, and this is really a motel. However, since we made our plans at the last minute during the high season and were therefore limited in places to choose from, we went ahead and booked it. We stayed in the "Brookside" motel, in a double queen room. The room had maple furnishings with mostly pine panelled walls, giving it the feel of a mountain cabin. The room was exceptionally clean. The TV could have been set up higher - you could really only watch it sitting up in bed or from the chair. We had dinner at the 6 House Pub next door which was good. Sitting in the high backed wing chairs made it very comfortable and the atmosphere was very New England. The burgers were good and the french fries were excellent. I had the lava cake for dessert which was awesome. The next morning we had the continental breakfast, also served in the 6 House Pub. It was your usual continenal breakfast - baked goods, an assortment of breads, fresh fruit, etc. - with the exception of a Belgium waffle maker where you could make your own waffles! They were very good too! Anyway, they do have luxury suites, but at $279 per night, they were more than we were prepared to spend for one night's lodging. We asked to look at one of the unoccupied ones and WOW when they say luxury, they MEAN luxury. But we were content with our "cabin" room. All in all, it was a pleasant stay.

My husband and I really liked the 1896 House. We stayed at the Pondside Jr Suite, which is upstairs and quite private. The entrance was a bit indirect, and the entry hall is where the housekeeping closet is located for the entire Pondside motel. The unit itself was extremely clean. The bath is new(er) with separate shower and 2-person jet tub. Much of the rest of the unit needs updating - some areas of woodwork only had one coat of paint, some areas were peeling. Decor is not the focus here. BUT we really liked our stay there and felt that it was a great deal for the area with a fully functional kitchen. Also, the Pub/Restaurant in the main building across the road was good - very cozy relaxed atmosphere, good selections on tap, friendly staff. Breakfast is included and was a good choice of pastries, breads, bagels, boiled eggs, cereals, yogurt, fruit, coffee tea etc. We left items in the room when we left and they were returned to us promptly.

Charming, reasonable, clean, convenient - just what you would want from a country motel. Well, my wife did say the shower could have been a little larger, but we could have taken a room with a tub if I had known. Reading the Sunday paper by the stream was a treat after hours on the road.

My daughter and I make an annual trip to the Massachusetts Berkshires for relaxation and rediscovery. The service here is attentive but understated; you'll find your room perfectly appointed but if you should need anything the staff is close by. The room is comfortable with rustic charm--quilts, wood paneling, rockers on the porch--but also has a coffee maker and cable TV . The beds are comfortable, the bathroom clean with a nice shower and tub, toiletries are provided. You can elect to use the air conditioning or take advantage of the cooler weather and just leave the windows open, especially in the Brookside units which are further off the main road. It is minutes to Williamstown where you will find two fabulous museums, many small shops and art galleries, theatres galore, and restaurants for all tastes and budgets. Not much further is No. Adams where MassMOCA should not be missed. Of course, if you are tired from a busy day, the '6 House Pub is perfect for a quiet meal either in the dining room or on the outdoor patio by the fire pit. For breakfast, you will find anything you could possibly want provided as part of your accommodation. The coffee is delicious, never-ending, and hot.

We especially like that we could become regulars and stay here every year on our Berkshire weekend; our least favorite thing is having to leave to head back to Boston and other places!

My friends, family, and I have been staying here for at least 15 years. It is always enjoyable. Well-located, charming and immaculate, it is always a welcome respite in the Berkshires. The owners have made this a special, charming place with a friendly atmosphere.

This is not a "fancy" hotel, but the people couldn't have been more accommodating, helpful, and friendly. the person at the desk greeted us like we were friends invited for a stay. The room was bright, clean, and very comfortable. It included all the details that add to one's comfort such as lots of clean towels in good condition, everything in excellent working order, stands for your suitcases, fresh looking appearance. It was very close to the Clark Museum which was our destination. The Pub, the eating place on site, was fun, delicious, and reasonable. There were all sorts of interesting drinks, excellent choice of wines, and a creative and tasty menu. The room included a generous breakfast with yogurt, hard boiled eggs, varous cereals, breads, and pastreys. This is a spot I would recommend to friends and be happy to experience again. Great value.

!896 House, by the brook, turned out to be a good option. The room was cozy with pine panelling and colonial furniture. The bath and shower were good sized and the bed comfortable.

Dinner at a restaurant on the property was well served and reasonably priced.

For an early riser, the breakfast hours are inconvenient. They start at 8 a.m. I went into town and had a $10.00 breakfast at the Williams Inn. I am glad I stayed at 1896 House rather than the Williams Inn.

You can't go wrong with this motel, which is back from the highway & not expensive, at least in late May when I was passing through Williamstown. The two airedales are well behaved.
