The 1896 House Country Inn - Barnside Inn
Ranked #8 of 9 Williamstown B&B and Inns
Reviewed 4 May 2013

Williamstown itself is calm and manicured, and given the fact that it is entirely dominated by Williams College one would expect the student influence to have made it more lively. But these are calm and manicured students, so the place is simply relaxing. It does, however, have some great art museums (the Clark, Williams College and, five miles down the road, MassMoCA contemporary art museum) and good hiking in the surrounding hills. Staying in the Barnside Inn at the 1896 House hotel/motel complex made for a very relaxing and enjoyable few days. Our suite (the Empire Suite) was very spacious, with really comfortable armchairs for reading, excellent bathroom, and very good bed. Each suite opens up onto its own space on the deck outside, with comfortable seating. Ignore the over-the-top and somewhat cringe-making descriptions of each of the six suites on their website (I don't think they were being ironic) - these are excellent places to stay. And the private breakfast room for the residents in the suites was welcoming, and the breakfasts good, with the main hot dish cooked individually by a member of staff. The cleaning etc of each room was done to a very high standard. This is a very good place to spend a few days, with the added bonus of the excellent craft beers and serviceable food at the '6 Pub next door.

My husband and I stayed in one of the suites next to the '6 House Pub for two nights in April. The suite was very roomy, with a full living room, small kitchen, super comfy four poster bed surrounded by curtains, and the best jacuzzi tub I've ever had the pleasure of using. There's also a working gas fireplace right in front of the bed and a TV adjacent to the bed. The location is very close to Williams College and the Clark Art Museum and several restaurants, and just 15 minutes away from MassMOCA. The staff was very welcoming and accomodating. We ended up eating dinner both nights at the '6 House Pub at the bar because the bartender and the patrons were all so friendly and the food was so delicious. We had such a great weekend here; I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants a quick, romantic getaway near some excellent art museums.

Nestled in the mountains of western MA, a simple, mute delightful get-away. The suites are roomy and comfortable. Just out the door was a porch with chairs and a table, overlooking a babbling brook. The restaurant had a remarkably varied and extensive menu and the food did not disappoint.

We stayed in the Barnside Suite and as soon as we walked into the room we felt like we made a great choice! The room was just as we pictured and we were pleasantly surprised as most times the pictures they show are much nicer than in person. The grounds were beautiful and very peaceful, including the brooke that runs through the property. The room is as described by other reviewers...spacious, cozy, very clean and well kept...and is quite romantic. Loved the jacuzzi and the romantic canopy bed in the suite! The food was wonderful...loved the breakfasts in such a warm and welcoming atmosphere with so much to choose from! Dinner at the restaurant was fabulous! Staff at the Inn were very helpful and pleasant, very eager to share with us all the sights and things to do in the area. All and all...had a great weekend and enjoyed it immensely. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing, peaceful and romantic weekend together!

Room Tip: The Barnside Suite was perfect...with a great and spacious porch to enjoy. Very quiet!

1896 complex consists of two motel-like structures and the old barn converted into large suites. We stayed at the Barnside Inn for two nights, and loved it.
The main room is very large; about the size of two regular B & B rooms. It included a desk, couch, chair, credenza with TV, closet and fireplace (gas). At the end is a good-sized dressing room with sink, and a large-sized bathroom to the right. The bathroom includes a Jacuzzi a sink, and a very large walk in shower. This room is very large.
The first suite has been converted into the breakfast room. A buffet includes breads, fruit, and other items. Lovely Delores (sp?) cooks a different hot breakfast each day - Belgium waffles one morning and eggs/ham/potato the next.
We had dinner in the attached restaurant one night and at the nearby Mezze the next. Reviews will be posted in the restaurant section of TripAdvisor.
There is a lot to do in and near Williamstown - including MassMOCA and Clark museum.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally good, but decorated differently.

The room was comfortable and romantic, my wife loved reading in front of the fireplace, and the whirlpool tub. Breakfast was candlelit in a different room and the spread was amazing - aside from the bread, rolls, fruit, coffee and juices, we were also treated to a hot homemade meal. The location is perfect - close to several small towns and ideal for skiing. The staff were all extremely helpful and polite and made us feel at home. We will definitely be returning and plan to try out a different room and see what it has to offer.
