The 1896 House Country Inn - Barnside Inn
Ranked #8 of 9 Williamstown B&B and Inns
Reviewed 19 January 2014

My wife and I just returned from a 4 day stay at "1896" - one of the top 2 B & B's we have stayed in. From the room to the staff everything was top notch. The room was beautiful and very clean - Jacuzzi perfect at the end of a busy day. Breakfast was excellent - like having a personal chef. Dinner in '6 restaurant was also excellent as was the service. We will return.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Barnside King Room - has Jacuzzi and fireplace

My husband and I do a short getaway right after the Holidays, we got a great deal on living social. We had suite 205. We enjoyed the hot tub, cozy king size bed and the quiet. We ate dinner at the pub, great food and service. The front desk lady was very nice she booked a massage for the both of us. Dolores made us breakfast every morning. We felt very special. We will be back.

My significant other and I are both in our twenties and had never stayed in a suite before since that had always been cost prohibitive. In the past we had enjoyed bed and breakfasts, so when I saw that the Barnside Inn had extremely affordable suites and also provided a fresh cooked breakfast, I could not have been more excited. We were not disappointed with our stay, and I would definitely recommend this place. Breakfast was yummy, room was comfortable (best pillows ever), and the property was quiet. All of the major Berkshire towns were also very accessible from this location. All in all, it was the perfect place to spend a quiet anniversary together.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Colonial Suite, which had a little kitchenette. Keep in mind that there are no full...

We once had a Package called the title of your review! Yes, our Suites are not meant for cooking in. Only Suite 201 (yours) is equipped for reheating leftovers, or having a quick bite. We do however have a 3 Room Apartment with a full kitchen & standard appliances if that is what a guest prefers.
Thanks for such a nice review! We hope you will return!

The 1896 House was the perfect choice for our cozy winter getaway. My girlfriend and I were looking for a New England destination to escape to over winter break. We chose the 1896 House because of its location (we were driving up from New York City), proximity to ski resorts, and the great deal available through LivingSocial.

Upon arrival, a friendly feline named Milo greeted us at the check-in desk (in addition to a human attendant, of course). He instantly put a smile on our faces and made us feel welcome. The check-in process was quick and simple; within no time we were settling into our suite.

Spacious and elegant, our accommodations exceeded expectations. We stayed in the Empire Suite which contained gilded nineteenth century décor. The weather was well below freezing, so we immediately switched on the fireplace to warm up.

Our LivingSocial deal included a four-course dinner at the ‘6 House Pub, which was conveniently located right around the corner from our suite. We appreciated the friendly, attentive service, cozy armchairs, and hearty cuisine. The portions were a bit excessive for our appetites, so we brought leftovers back to our suite for lunch the following day. (The absence of a microwave in our suite, however, made reheating our food a bit challenging). Everything we ordered was good, and we particularly enjoyed the signature honey bourbon chicken wings.

The remainder of our stay eased by. While the weather outside was frightful, the fire in our suite was so delightful. One afternoon, I curled up on the sofa and leafed through a collection of short stories. I settled on “Winter Dreams,” an appropriately named F. Scott Fitzgerald tale. I’d be hard pressed to think of a more relaxing way to spend a snowy New England evening.

For those who harbor cozy winter dreams of their own, I highly recommend the 1896 House.

Yes, it was frigid outside, and we are all glad that you could get cozy! Although we do not have microwaves in most of the Suites, there is one available at Brookside near the office for guests' use. Thank you for painting such an inviting picture of your stay! I think you could write a wonderful novel of your own to rival F. Scott Fitzgerald,s works!

I have read some of the other reviews and have to say some people are never satisfied...We love our time at the Barnside suites. This is our second visit and we will go back. It snowed lightly when we were there and is was so lovely and serene. The rooms are comfortable and we especially loved our fireplace which kept our room toasty. Everyone from the cleaning lady to people just walking around were friendly and helpful. We loved the breakfast cooked and served by Delores and her wonderful homemade syrup. We found the food to be good and plentiful to the point we usually don't need lunch!! Thanks 1896 House!!

Thank you so much for being so appreciative! It is truly important for us to hear as 98% of the time things are great, but no one is perfect (though we try, LOL!)! We are glad you enjoyed the breakfast and Delores. She is a lot of fun as well as a good cook! Thanks again!

We stayed for 2 nights in a December snow storm in the Victorian Luxury Suite. The room smelled very musty, had to go buy some fabreze! We turned on the gas fireplace because it was very cold outside ( 12 degrees) and the flame was so puny, you could hardly feel the heat. The fake tree in the room was coated in dust as were the wall decorations. The quilt at the bottom of the bed had a crusty stain on it. The woodwork and light switches were dirty.
On the good side, the cook, Delores was fantastic and friendly and we had a nice meal in the pub! The sleigh ride at Sweet Brook farms was the highlight! That was wonderful as was the dinner at Mezze across the street. Sorry to say I wouldn't stay there again.

Lo and behold, this review sure caught us by surprise as we pride ourselves on our immaculate rooms! As one can ascertain by previous reviews, this is an isolated incident. The duvet cover on the foot of the bed had been brought to us for replacement by this guest. The previous guest had spilled coffee with cream (?) on it and had re-folded the duvet neatly. Our housekeeper of 12 years who maintains the suites exclusively, had not checked the duvet as it looked as though it had not been used, but still folded neatly at the foot of the bed. After changing the bed linens, she simply replaced the duvet in its folded position. There is an artificial tree in that suite, with hundreds of leaves, which should be dusted more frequently. We do "deep" housekeeping twice a year where baseboards, woodwork, etc. are washed, and so too every other surface. This is accomplished after our busy season, in January, and again in June before the busy season. The tree is part of that routine. So at the time of this writing, it was due. Of course, there is daily housekeeping as well, but with a 3 hour window to clean rooms between guests, some surfaces are reserved for fall and spring cleaning. Also our housekeeper, who has always been meticulous and hard working, has been slowly losing her eyesight and admitted to not wearing her glasses while cleaning, so she was not aware that the tree and possibly other less used surfaces needed to be cleaned sooner.
The light switches however were installed by the builder and he used beige switches with white cover plates in that room. Therefore the switches can look dirty or discolored. The fireplace also was the choice of the contractor. But in the evening when the lights are dimmed, the fireplace offers a nice feeling and heats the room as well, though we too would appreciate a stronger flame.
We are happy that the guest appreciated our breakfast and Dolores, and are grateful that we were made aware of some issues so we were able to rectify going forward. Of course, we would have appreciated them coming to us first.

We stayed here for one night primarily based on the rave reviews and opted for one of the Barnside suites, again based on strong reviews. The location is pretty - set by a serene brook. The suite was $199/night. Instead of feeling like a nicely appointed B&B, it has the general look and feel of an upgraded motel room that was upgraded in the 80s. The room had some nice appointments but was nothing terribly special. Some of the antiques were pretty, others were sort of cheesy. Fake flowers adorned the room including a rose left on the bed, that was deemed to be "scented" though it actually wasn't. Apparently, these are a hot commodity, because the room guide stated that if one "wanted to take it with them, it could be added to the bill" The fireplace was a nice touch. The jacuzzi was pleasant but the water wasn't warm enough. There was a gorgeous Tiffany light above the tub, but the CFL light didn't allow it to be dimmed. Everything just fell short of the mark. We went to sleep disappointed but were looking forward to the "candlelight breakfast" that sounded elegant and special. It is served in a room with four or five tables, of which only one is anything other than a standard diner table. There was no choice of breakfast - our's was French toast and sausage links that were mediocre at best. The additional breakfast items were set up as a buffet. There was ample choice - yogurt, cereal, fresh fruit, muffins, yummy cinnamon rolls, juices, breakfast breads, etc. But I've had much nicer breakfasts at other B&Bs. Personally, I wouldn't rush back. If we had paid $125/night, I'd give them 3.5 stars. For $199, I expect more.

Room Tip: A room by the brook is nice for the serene sound.

Of course we are sorry that this guest was disappointed. All of our suites have different decor so perhaps he would have appreciated another suite more, as decor is a matter of taste. The suites were built in the year 2000, in the space that housed our former banquet room, and they are decorated in 6 different historical periods. They are not motel like in any way, (some have 12 foot ceilings and all have antiques) but one enters directly from a porch without going through any common areas, so I can see that some people would get that feeling. Others like the privacy of no hallway where others walking through can hear everything.
Our breakfast tables are exact reproductions of early tap tables, the same as we have in our Pub, and were created just for us by The Seraph, in Sturbridge MA.
Although we offer buffet selections to accommodate those with dietary preferences, we do change the breakfast entree every morning, alternating between savory and sweet. Sometimes it is very fancy, and the next day may be more simple. When guests stay more than one evening, they may request certain items, or something less rich for the next day.
Ours is not a traditional Bed & Breakfast, so if that is what the guest is looking for, it may not meet expectations, and that is why we call ourselves an Inn. However, by the many positive reviews, I think that fact is not that necessary to appreciate what we do offer.
