“First time downhill skiers @ Shanty Creek/Summit”
Reviewed 17 January 2007

Rats, I just wrote a long review and when I tried to go back and edit it, it disappeared. Well, here is a shorter version.

We stayed at the Summit part of the Shanty Creek resort over MLK weekend. It was a weekend of memorable family fun.

The rooms are larger versions of well-maintained motel rooms. Our second room (we asked to be switched to get a better view) had a micro, mini-fridge, coffeemaker and cupboard full of kitchen equipment. It was very clean and the beds were okay, but don't expect your "heavenly beds." One side has a view of the parking lot and building, the other has a beautiful view of the lake and hills. Schuss and Cedar River looked more upscale. Our room met our expectations and we were satisfied once we got the good view.

You might want to skip the restaurant at Summit. Overpriced, dour staff, and the food is not good. After two tries at the restaurant, we drove to downtown Bellaire (2 min down the street ) and ate our meals at Tooney's (cozy diner, excellent breakfast) and Lulu's (more sophisticated, scrumptious fondu extravaganza that set us back about $100 for 4 of us). The hotel has some movies available "on demand," but we rented a movie at the video store in Bellaire and watched it on our laptop.

The skiing experience was the prime attraction. Excellent staff at the hill, excellent instructor, excellent equipment available to rent. The bunny hill was just right in terms of challenge. (The bunny hill is out of sight from the parking lot by the main chairlift. You will not be trying to ski on those big hills by the chairlift until you feel ready!) To the great relief of our kids, teens were separate from toddlers so no awkwardness there, altho occasionally a student from one group would plow into someone in the other group. Everyone was good-natured and having fun. We also had a great time tubing and having a snow fight!

Bring your bathing suit if you want to swim at Schuss. There were crazy people running around in the snow by the steaming outdoor pool Looked like they were having a good time.

To summarize, the scenery was pretty, it was a very comfortable environment for first-timers, the kids learned to ski, and downtown Bellaire had its charms. We had a great time and made a lot of good memories at this resort!

I took my wife to stay at the Cedar River resort at Shanty Creek the weekend of May 20-23, 2005 for my her birthday. Note, there are three main resorts at Shanty Creek: The Summit, Schuss Mountain, and Cedar River.

We had a 1-BR suite at Cedar River on the 3rd floor in the main building facing the 18th green of the Cedar River golf course. The Cedar River units are fairly new and our unit was very clean. The room had a sofa bed, chair, tv, gas fireplace, desk, dining room table with two chairs, and a nice balcony w/ 2-chairs and a table. The kitchenette had a small undercounter fridge, microwave and coffee maker (no stove, oven or sink). The bathroom was very large with a jacuzzi tub and a separate shower. The bedroom had two queen-size beds and a tv.

La Vigna restaurant is on-site at Cedar River and the Italian cuisine was excellent. There is also a small restaurant for lunch outside the Pro Shop that serves sandwiches and was very good. We also ate at the Lakeview restaurant at the Summit and Ivan's at Schuss. The food was very good, and the service was excellent. Prices are on the high side, but the ambiance and view at Lakeview was worth it.

My wife got the manicure and pedicure at the Spa and enjoyed both. We both had massages and were satisfied with them. The spa is located over at the Summit.

We golfed the Cedar River course and the Shuss Mountain course. Both were excellent. Cedar River is the more expensive course, but we actually enjoyed the Schuss course more for the scenery. Both courses have lunch service where you order your lunch at the 9th/18th tee (phone provided), and it's ready for you at the turn. Cedar River, Summit and Schuss all have excellent practice facilities.

We enjoyed our weekend very much and would recommend Cedar River at Shanty Creek, even though it is a little on the expensive side (we did not feel we didn't get our money's worth). I would recommmend for both golf and skiing.

We found our 1 bedroom condo with loft (sleeps 8/6) in the Ridgewalk section to be quite spacious. Although it was a bit dated, the unit worked for us. As we walked in, the first thing that hit us was the ugly polka dot linoleum in the kitchen, which was straight out of the 1970’s. Upon further inspection, it was clean, and the small kitchen had all the necessities, including full fridge, stove, and microwave. Enough coffee filters and dish soap were provided for the whole week. The living/dining room area was adequate sized, and there was a TV with VCR/DVD player and sleeper sofa. The dining room table only seated 4, but there were 2 extra seats at the adjacent countertop. The master bedroom had a king sized bed and TV in the room. One thing that surprised us – the mattresses were clearly new pillow top, and were the best, most comfortable we have had in a timeshare. The bedroom furniture was in good condition. Upstairs, there were two double beds in the loft, again with the nice mattresses. Both bathrooms were plain but adequate, with plenty of spare towels. There was also a mid-week cleaning which surprised us. Since it was dark when we arrived, we didn’t notice the best part of the unit until the next morning – we had a fabulous view of Lake Bellaire and the Michigan sunsets from our balcony! Two things that we missed not having in the unit– a washer dryer unit and a TV in the loft for the kids.

The star activity at this resort is golf. Three were three courses on site, plus two others adjacent to the resort. My husband played The Chief – one of the newer courses close to the resort – and said it was the nicest course he has ever played. There were also two regular sized outdoor pools and an indoor pool/hot tub that we could use. There was also a disc golf course free for use on the ski hill during the summer. We didn’t try any of the restaurants on the property, as they seemed rather expensive. There weren’t any planned activities during the week that we stayed. Most of organized activities such as bonfires and evening entertainment for the summer season didn’t start until later in June.

The location of the resort was somewhat remote, but it was a central location for touring the beautiful towns along Lake Michigan. Some of the highlights for us included parasailing in Charlevoix, jet skiing on Torch Lake, climbing the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, swimming at the numerous beaches including the state park in Petosky, and touring the lighthouse and wineries in the Old Mission Peninsula. In terms of dining, we really liked the Grey Gables Inn in Charlevoix. For a fun and casual atmosphere with incredible milkshakes, try Don’s Drive Inn in Traverse City.

In summary, we very much enjoyed our trip and would return to this resort

schuss mountain resort is a family friendly in the summer and winter. during the summer torch lake is great lake to boat, swim, and fish. there are golf courses for every level of play. a great course for family play is called "the farm".

schuss mtn is fun skiing! i used all the child care services available. they have a excellent ski school. i have two children that love going to ski school. it's not the mtn,not the weather, it's the instructors that make the school.

i have vacationed at schuss mtn for about 15 years and always have a great time.
