This really is a jewel of a restaurant; I only regret I didn't drive a block further from the library than I have in the past few years because I've clearly missed some amazing meals. It's possible that they're trying harder to impress because they're in Benton Harbor; the St. Joe restaurants can rest on the laurels of their location and slide a bit.
The beers were good--we haven't seen them elsewhere at other restaurants. The wine I had was only so-so, but then 'house wines' often are "beige". The chicken I had was a bit dry (but then restaurant chicken often is!) although the sriracha-wasabi sauce was good in that I could taste both the sriracha and the wasabi but was not left feeling that the mucous membranes of my mouth, sinuses and throat were scorched into sprinting for Cass County, weeping, seeping and shrieking in pain. But the ribs...my god, the ribs! Tender and sliding off the bone. Though the sauce could not compare to Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City or even Lark's, down the street and around the corner, the ribs themselves were worth the price.
I understand that the menu changes, so what I had won't necessarily be there for future diners who come after my review. I've also been to haute cuisine restaurants in Chicago over those same years that I've lived in southwest Michigan and while it's true that this would be only mid-range in the "Le Snoot" category when compared to Chicago...this isn't Chicago. Get over yourself and stop to think: did you enjoy the food and the evening?
