Service was very personal and individualized. The room was very comfortable, relaxing....a great 'bed n breakfast'...the attached restaurant has a good 'North Woods' menu...nice way to step back and unwind. Nice view of Lake Superior on the huge front veranda.

My wife, two daughters, and I were headed to Marquette to stay the night and I called the Thunder Bay Inn to see if they had any open rooms. The did and the rates were surprisingly affordable ($70-$100/night) We decided to stay there for the night and spent the afternoon casually driving up the Big Bay Road. We enjoyed beaches and beautiful terrain. We arrived a little late at our destination but found everyone to be very friendly and accomidating. Our room was beautifully furnished and looked like a living museum. Rooms that weren't occupied were open and walking up and down the main hall upstairs was a real treat. A big upstairs porch overlooking Lake Independance gave the feel of being at a bed and breakfast on Mackinaw Island. The morning brought a very nice breakfast with juice, milk, coffee, boiled eggs, bagles, cereal, muffins and fruit. The breakfast area is in a beautifully restored great room on the main floor. There was a baby grand piano, great historical artifacts, and was a great place to take in the history of the area. If you're looking for a pleasant surprise this is it!

After three days of riding a motorcycle around Lake Superior, Thunder Bay Inn was a welcomed stop. The food was very good with some local flavor. If your are looking for rooms with all the modern conveniences this is not the place. But, if want history, comfort, and GREAT hosts this is it. The rooms are set in the twenties with comfortable beds and relaxing settings. Their are no tvs in the rooms, but it was nice to be back in a time where the t.v. did not dominate the room. It was peaceful and quiet. Wayne and Gretchen Peacock were wonderful hosts, showing us the areas that were used in the Movie and telling the history of the hotel. Duke, their son, is a wonderful cook with some tales of his own. I will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Call ahead, some rooms do not have their own showers.

My husband and I arrived at the inn for the holiday weekend. We had to inquire at the bar how to go about checking in since there was no one in the lobby. Our room was very shabby and the bathroom was DISGUSTING. There was hair on the floor and all over the window sill. The bathtub and shower curtain were covered in mold. The shower head does not spray water at all and literally falls off in your hand when you try to adjust it. The bathroom faucet did not have an aerator or washers and leaked like you wouldn't believe. The toilet did not flush toilet paper and wobbled badly when you sat on it. The food at the restaurant was okay but the service was atrocious. We ordered an appetizer and pizza and waited over 25 minutes for the waitress to bring the wrong order to our table. When she finally did bring our food everything was plopped down together and that was it. Not once did she offer to refill our drinks or check in on us to see how everything was. She spent her time sitting behind the bar texting on her cell phone instead. After dinner we went to the lobby to watch "Anatomy of a Murder" because it was partially filmed at the inn and is the inn's claim to fame. After finally getting the television working (it was missing a remote control) and settling in to watch a VERY good movie (the portions we could hear anyway due to all the noise including playing the piano. The continental breakfast consisted of juice and a prepackaged item that vaguely resembled a cinnamon roll. Upon checking out we were told that the owners were not available and gave our room key to a teenage girl they had left in charge. All in all a horrific experience at what appeared on the outside to be a charming and quaint inn.

The Thunder Bay Inn has the potential to be a wonderful romantic getaway. Unfortunately, the lack of any attention to detail has made it a place we will never return to, nor can we recommend it in good faith to others.

Upon arrival, there is no lobby to check in at; we had to go to the restaurant bar to inquire about our room reservation. We were then led back to a gift shop where Gretchen gave us our keys and told us she was too busy to show us around, so her husband would show us our room. He brought us there, turned on the window A/C unit, then left. This pretty much set the tone for the entire stay.

We brought our suitcase in, settled in, and decided to sit on the large balcony for awhile before dinner. The floor of the balcony was littered in dead bugs. Moths, flies, June bug carcasses everywhere. 5 minutes with a broom could have made this a much more appealing place to rest after the drive up there.

We then decided to go downstairs for dinner. The food was not bad. We ordered a pizza, and some appetizers to munch on while we waited for the pizza to bake. Unfortunately, our server, Chelsea, took our order (which we did mention to her that we wanted the appetizers first) and then disappeared for 25 minutes only to return with everything all at once. She set everything down, got us ketchup for the fries, and then disappeared for another 45 minutes. We were out of water to drink before we even got to our pizza, but she never came back to check on us ever. Gretchen's husband, one of the owners mind you, stood behind the bar eating pie. He never ventured out to see how the customers were doing, or asked if anyone needed anything. The other waitress in the place seemed content to stand behind the bar as well, texting on her phone until people came in or orders came out. The cook was talking on his cell phone while preparing the food. It's nice that people can be so connected to the outside while supposedly working at a job which they are being paid to connect with the customers. Again, 5 minutes out of their busy lifestyles would have made this a much better dining experience.

The restrooms for the restaurant were horrible. The men's room stank of urine and the faucets in the ladies room poured water everywhere except in the sink. Some basic plumbing repairs, a mop and detergent, and again, a few minutes could have made a difference.

Now, the worst part... The bathroom in the hotel room. We pulled back the shower curtain and were greeted with black mold on the sides and bottom of the tub, as well as the inside bottom of the shower curtain. -Gross! There was a lot of hair on the windowsill and the floor around the toilet. Speaking of the toilet, it wasn't secured to the floor very well, as it was "wobbly" and it also did not flush very well. The faucet in the sink needed an aerator, and the shower head was in such poor shape there might as well not been one on at all. There is a Menards and a Lowes in Marquette, and these parts don't cost a lot of money, nor does the maintenance and cleaning take a lot of time.

In the morning, we told the housekeeper about the mold in the tub, and her reply was "oh yeah. That tub's kind of hard to clean." Hello... Cleanser and a Scotch-Brite pad and 10 minutes of scrubbing would have taken care of it, but again, it seemed nobody wants to make any extra effort to ensure customer satisfaction anymore. Sad. We then asked to speak with the owners and were told that they both went to town and were not available, so we had to give the room keys to the housekeeper and leave without being able to voice our concerns.

Room Tip: Make sure room is clean when you check in.

We took a chance and drove to Big Bay on a meandering tour of the UP. Other accomodations didn't seem to want folks without reservations first, but when we stopped at Thunder Bay Inn they were warm and welcoming. The food was excellent and the Inn was very charming with lots of history. I've recommended this inn to all my friends and family.

We have been wanting to get to this spot for years and on this U P we trip made it happen. We had the inn to ourselves as it was the day after Lobor Day and felt like we owned the place. We ate both lunch and dinner in the tavern, which is part of this old historic inn, and the food and atmosphere were great. The rooms are nice and the whole inn offers a great feel of a bygone era. The Peacock family are working very hard to make this place great and they are doing well. We will be back to this special place.
