We reserved through Open Table and noted that we would like a quiet table. Upon arrival, we were escorted to a noisy table by the bar. We asked to move seats and were told that there are only 12 tables, and that the tables by the fireplace (furthest away from the bar) were already reserved for anniversaries. This put a damper on things, but they ultimately moved us to just outside by the lobby which proved to be much more quiet.

I'd recommend the white orchid cocktail, the salmon, the crab cake, and the tomato bisque. My boyfriend's steak was also cooked to perfection. Very pricey for the overall atmosphere, but the food was high quality and our waitress was delightful.

If you buy a package at the hotel, you'll receive a $100 voucher which takes a little bit of the sting away from the price, but overall, the price should include PHENOMENAL service and quiet seating, if requested.

The service here was as wonderful as the hotel it resides in. The food was another story. I ordered a loaded baked potato soup, which was good not great. However, I made the mistake of ordering the Rugby Burger which sounded like a good choice based on the menu and ordered it medium as I always do with hamburgers. It took an unusually long time to cook and the results showed as it came out well done. But not only was the burger overcooked, the bun was burnt as well. I am a big eater, but could only stomach about half of this before I ate enough. Again, the service was great but there are better places to eat in Birmingham.

Dear rusig96,

Thank you for your kind comments regarding your recent stay at The Townsend Hotel. We appreciate your feedback and do take your comments seriously.

I was pleased to read that you were satisfied with our service and the hotel in general.

Please accept my apologies for your dissatisfaction with the Rugby Grille burger. It is certainly not consistent with the quality of food we provide on a day to day basis. I do hope you mentioned this to your waiter as they are usually very good at providing alternatives if you are not satisfied.

I would appreciate on your return visit to the hotel if you could contact me directly so I can personally handle your next meal in The Rugby Grille.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Birmingham and The Townsend Hotel.

Sincerely,

Always simple choices for excellent food- whether a burger (the best) or a steak. The room is comfortable and relaxing with an intimate appeal. The staff is the best the Townsend has to offer and always a treat. I highly recommend. JC

We ate here for lunch during Restaurant Week in Birmingham. The waiter recommended the seafood soup which was excellent. My order of scallops were warm (and there were only two --a skimpy portion) and they reheated them. Chocolate dessert was great. It was a cold Winter's day and we were seated near the fireplace which was a treat. It's a pricey menu, and there are many other places that compete in this segment.
