Weathervane Terrace Inn and Suites
Ranked #4 of 9 Hotels in Charlevoix
Reviewed 28 August 2007

When this hotel was opened in the mid-1960’s it was considered a masterpiece, and became THE place to be on Little Traverse Bay. It’s still a good place to stay, and has a unique kind of charm you won’t find anywhere else. Read up on the history of the place before you arrive: [--] and you’ll appreciate its unique design even more.

First and foremost of its benefits is the location. If you stay here you are in the heart of Charlevoix. You’re right on the river yet also in the midst of restaurants and shops, and you can walk down the piers and stroll on the beach. You’ll also be able to watch boats as they enter the channel, with the drawbridge raised every 30 minutes (between 6 am and 9 pm) to allow them passage into the harbor.

We stayed in an $80 room (ask for the Internet Rate) that had a King bed, a kitchenette (complete with microwave, 2 burner stove, coffee maker, sink, plates, glasses, and basic utensils) and a small balcony with no view whatsoever. If you’d like a view, you’ll pay more but you’ll be able to see the harbor and probably really enjoy your stay. The room was acceptably clean and furnished, but could use a complete cosmetic renovation. We used the free wireless internet service and found it to be very reliable.

The Weathervane restaurant next door has very good food and is right on the river with a superb view of the channel and harbor.

The staff was very friendly, and we enjoyed our stay.

The negative aspects of this hotel are fairly minor. They include:
The hotel has no elevator in the main buildings – you will have to carry your suitcases up steep outdoor steps. While the free breakfast consists of standard continental fare of cereal, bagels, english muffins, coffee cake or danish, and beverages, the day we stayed, they were out of most items an hour before the breakfast service was scheduled to close.

What a great experience. From our room at the Weathervane we took an evening walk to the piers and strolled the beach. We watched the boats as they entered the channel from their day on the lake. Our suite at the Weathervane was great and the staff was a pleasure to deal with. For a couple of days we were able to erase the stresses of our working lives and relax. Thanks Weathervane for a 5 star stay.

My husband and I stayed for two nights at the Weathervane Terrace in Charlevoix, MI, as we were in town for a friend's wedding. The hotel is located right in downtown Charlevoix within easy walking distance of the local shops.

We stayed in room 50, a non-smoking King room. The room was clean, smelled fine, and was generally comfortable. The only problems we experienced were:
1. The bed was a little on the soft side for our taste.
2. The heat was very difficult to control. We were burning up most of the time, but finally got it to behave on Day 2.
3. The door into the toilet room bangs into the light/fan in the shower area.
4. The metal ring around the outside of the shower faucet fixture was loose/coming off. We reported this to maintenance.

The large in-room Jacuzzi tub was very nice, once we figured out how to turn it on! The timer switch is located over by the bathroom sink and it is not labeled, so you would think it's a heat lamp switch or something. It's kind of a pain if the timer runs out while you are in the tub, to have to get out and go over by the sink to restart it.

The FREE high-speed internet worked very well with our laptop. Just be advised that you do have to get a password from the front desk, so ask for that when you check in if you need it.

Free breakfast is available 6-11 AM. Consists of juices, coffee/tea, 4 cereal choices and 2% milk, bagels, english muffins, coffee cake/danish, and instant oatmeal.

We did eat dinner at the Stafford's Weathervane restaurant next door (the restaurant associated with the hotel). Average entree cost was about $20-25 and it was VERY good with big portions.

Overall, we thought this hotel was on the older side and could use some updating and tending to maintenance issues. But there was nothing awful about it and it does have character, plus it was clean.

The look is very 1960s/1970s. It's been around a while, and the wear and tear shows a bit. We stayed in the inexpensive rooms - no view, no terrace, but still only a minutes walk to all the same attractions. The room was adequately clean and furnished, but nothing more. I rather liked the funky decor of the place, but that's probably my personal problem... Still, the price is very reasonable, even during the height of summer, and that was the main attraction to our group.

We drive from Chicago to Charlevoix every Summer and we always stay at the Weathervane. The Michigan Suites have an excellent view of Lake Michigan and downtown shopping and restaurants are all just a short walk. The beautiful Charlevoix Pier is very close and makes for a nice walk day or evening. Every morning starts out with a Continental breakfast with an excellent view of Round Lake watching the boats and the Charlevoix Bridge rise.
A great location and a very nice staff make the Weathervane worth the drive.

Could park the car at Weathervane and leisurely walk over the channel bridge between Round Lake and Lake Michigan, shop the town, visit the beach, walk the pier, and enjoy some great restaurants. Standard Room was clean and fresh with fridge, microwave, ironing board, dryer, coffee--and the free breakfast was a treat with more variety than I've had in other places and a great view from the breakfast room. It's definitely on my list for a return visit.

If you are planning a trip north, you should include a stay at the Weathervane Terrace. The location is the best in the area -- on the channel, but with a view of Lake Michigan. Easy walk to downtown and restaurants. Accomodations reflect the Northern Michigan charm...and we found the staff friendly and helpful.
Enjoy!
