“A great hidden gem outside of Detroit-not your typical B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2014

What a nice surprise we were in for when we stopped at here on our way to Detroit! Thankfully my hubby agreed too since the Inn was not all country kitchy, fluffy foofy, girly, and pink with lace-so we stayed!
The close proximity allowed us plenty of time to enjoy breakfast before heading out in the morning with no need to sit in rush hour traffic. Jim the owner was so very hospitable. We loved the turndown service, robes, slippers, bottled water, chocolates and all of the suggestions and conversation with Jim. The resotration of the Inn was done by Jim and the photos of before and after were wonderful to see. Arriving here after a snowy morning drive from Green Bay, WI we were glad to enjoy walking around this lovely town; just wish we'd have been here when it was any day but a Monday, as most things are closed....we'd certainly come back if in the area...we live in Spain so not likely any time too soon sadly. if you have time, stop here for two nights minimum and enjoy the relaxation that comes with this host, the Inn and the town of Chelsea.

Room Tip: Choose the very heavenly Glazier suite with fireplace, sitting area and claw foot bathtub. Pure blis...

Kim and I want to thank you for your kind words and comments regarding our Inn and our town. Kim particularly laughed out loud with when your husband characterized our B&B as not too: "country kitchy, fluffy foofy, girly, and pink with lace-so we stayed!" He nailed what we are after: balanced charm without all over the top phroo phroo. That comment will help many with their decision to stay. Comments such as yours help us confirm too, that we are doing things right. However, there is always room to improve. Can't say we have many walk-ups from Spain. You're a first. We look forward to your future 2 day stay.

I was in Chelsea on some wonderful but exhausting business (visiting author to several hundred six through eight year olds) so I needed real downtime when I was not working. Jim was very thoughtful about making sure I had everything I needed from an extra heater to ward off the unseasonably cold temps to fridge storage for my leftovers and those wonderful crepes. This is my second visit to Chelsea House and its beautiful architecture, thoughtful hosts and comfortably appointed rooms will have me returning again and again. I highly recommend it!

Thank you for taking time to give your feedback to others, despite your own travel fatigue. We are always honored to have authors stay with us when they are here for the purpose of enriching the community and to specifically give our children encouragement to read and personalize their exposure to authors every spring. We appreciate your thoughts and description of your experiences here. Detailed feedback makes a difference to our clients when they are deciding between a hotel by the interstate or the only downtown lodging in town. If you aren't used to a B&B its hard to know what to expect and comments like yours help our guests and us. Thank you again for your kindness. Happy writing!

A beautiful, lovingly restored historic home shared with us lucky guests. Cozy fires in the fireplaces and cushy luxurious beds. A charming town with terrific restaurants all within walking distance...and it sounds like I MUST see a play at the Purple Rose! Jim is a charming and accommodating host. And I need to mention the yummy breakfast and the fruit crepes. Looking forward to my next visit!

I have to concur with all the good reports. Second time here, great hosts, basically next door to the Purple Rose, and everything downtown Chelsea. Recommend you call them first, before you call the restaurant, the Purple Rose, etc. I did it the hard way the first time, they can help put it all together for you. Last call the cell phone, forget the door bell, when you get there, it is cold in Michigan in the winter, Thereby you know where to park, and door will be opened for you . Great time for my wife and I. Great hosts. I would come back...I already did...Oh breakfast!!!

You are a great Trip Advisor user!!! Thanks for our review, but also sharing how we are uniquely right next to all the good food & theatre plus, we are ready to be your "Concierge" putting it all together. Your suggestion about calling on the way here was genius: it does help guests with information like, where to park and we can be ready at the door to let them in. Just pick Chelsea, we do everything else to ensure our guests have a great stay. We have been too slow to write our thank you but its no less sincere. We appreciate your kindness and hope your summer is great so far, even though it seemed long in coming. Fond Regards. Jim & Kim

Our winter weekend started with a thoughtful upgrade to a suite by Jim, one of our hosts. The welcome extended to a really interesting tour of the Inn including photos before and after its complete restoration. The time and conversation shared by our host almost gave us the impression we were his and Kim's only guests. However later we met six charming ladies, repeat guests who also gave high praise to the Inn, our hosts and the delicious breakfast. We will definitely visit the Inn again this spring.

Room Tip: See the virtual tour on the Inn's website. All the rooms are very nice.

My husband surprised me with a stay at this lovely Inn in Chelsea Michigan. The comfort and attention to detailed made this a wonderful stay. The location is premium, close to all the activities he had planned. Dinner at the "Common Grill", and a show at the "Purple Rose Theater". Jim was very informative and gracious. Breakfast was well presented and filling. We will surely return.

Superlatives for qualities appreciated by lovers of elegance and finery. The facility built in early 1880s has all the ambience of its age and all the convenience of modern electric, plumbing and hvac. Noteworthy is the gracious host greeting and presence. Breakfast is over the top. You'll be in the center of town with walking access to restaurants and the Purple Rose Theatre
We'll return to this proud town! Mary and Arthur Sugarman
