“Traditional Lakeland hotel - with a modern twist”
Reviewed 20 October 2012

The Scafell Hotel is perfectly situated in the Borrowdale valley. From outside it looks very traditional - much as it has looked for many years. The public rooms are very comfortable - with big squashy sofas and roaring fires in the bar and lounge areas. Around the back of the hotel is the welcoming Riverside Bar, with a good range of traditional ales and yet another log fire. Our bedroom was amazing. It was large and beautifully furnished - it even had a huge brass bed. The decor was a careful blend of old and modern and it all looked very clean and fresh. The bathroom was pretty stunning. Very modern with both bath and shower and all the toiletries you would expect. The food in the restaurant both in the evening and at breakfast was very good and the service attentive without being over the top.
All the staff were very welcoming. I would certainly return to this this hotel.

We stayed in this hotel with another couple during October 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This was our first stay, although we have patronised the Riverside Bar for many years while camping in the valley. The hotel has been well modernised and refurbished in recent years, but still retains its traditional character. As pictures in the cocktail bar and restaurant testifiy, this has been an hotel since Victorian times. Restaurant, cocktail bar and lounge are well appointed and comfortable (the latter having a nice warming fire with provision for one in the cocktail bar as well). Our room was in a modern annex close to the side of the main building. The room was nicely furnished with good en suite and providing all required facilities. The buildings at the side/back of the hotel containing quite a few of the rooms are a rather mixed bag of ancient and modern and maintenance is obviously a headache as we noticed a few signs of leakage in the ceilings of corridors.
The staff were extremely friendly and the service in the restaurant was attentive and professional. Food is excellent being of good quality often local sourced ingredients and dishes having a distinctly haut cuisine character. Dinner was £31.50 for four courses plus coffee in the lounge. The extensive wine list seemed a tad expensive starting around £22 apart from a limited house wine range at about £16.50. Breakfast was excellent with self service cerials etc and continental items (but lacking bread rolls and on one day croisants) and with hot options waiter served all of high quality.
The Riverside Bar is a public bar and whilst part of the main building, is accessed from outside. It is an institution in the area, being one of the few public bars in the valley and is very well patronised by walkers, climbers and campers. In years gone by it was quite basic (in contrast to the luxury of the hotel) In more recent years it has been modernised, but remains comfortable and cosy with fire, good real ales and top notch bar meals. Hotel guests have the option of walking round to the Riverside Bar for evening meal.
We paid £100 per night for our double room which we thought was quite good value.
Rosthwaite is in the heart of Borrowdale, a beautiful valley, and there are lovely walks staight from the hotel door.
We can thoroughly recommend the hotel.

We have just had a 2 night stay at the Scafell and were not disappointed, the moment we walked in we were made to feel so welcome and so was the dog who got spoilt rotten! This is such a beautiful part of the Lakes we walked during day and chilled out in the Riverside Bar in the evenings which was warm and bustling with great food. We met some lovely people and will definately be going back!

I've stayed at the Scafell several times over the past 10 years. I first "discovered" this unique place in the early '70s. Student finances limited accomodation to a "ridge" tent, so it was strictly "beer & skittles". The amazing first impression one accrues about being accommodated within the Hotel is this: a profound feeling of being "part of the landscape" but in comfort! Each bedroom is "individual" in its fixtures and fittings. They have all been given at least one (tasteful) refit since I first stayed. The quality of the cuisine (restaurant & bar-room) speaks for itself. I drink very sparingly myself but will sample a half of real ale, always in premium condition.

Room Tip: All rooms are double-glazed.Black-out curtains are fitted as standard. The walls are of stone. Th...

Lovely room, large and well furnished. Good breakfasts and evening meals although 2 of our party not too happy with the veggie options. Only tiny gripe gingerbread promised as part of evening meal with the coffee, when not there on night 1 we asked for it and promised to get some, by night 3 still none so slight disappointment as it is so yummy! Helpful, cheerful staff and would definitely return.

Must be our 15th year of staying at this hotel but this time was the first that we were joined by my husband's 2 brothers and a sister-in-law. Was a little apprehensive but they loved it too and 1 brother-in-law has already decided to join us for our next trip in February 2013. Staff wonderfully friendly as always, a newish staff member was a little unskilled in cocktail bar measures/ drinks but was supervised, food was excellent. Good job the walking is so good or I would put on pounds every visit. Oh - and the beer is great in the Riverside Bar too!

Room Tip: Room 7 can be warm (over kitchen) and can be a little noisy as it is over the entrance / exit to the...

Just had a great weekend here. Booked dinner, bed and breakfast . Room was one of the smallest we were told but it was well fitted and very clean. We were only there for one night so we weren't bothered about a lot of space! Really well decorated and spotless. The food was great - had a four course dinner - each course beautifully presented - Manged one sweet between us! Great scenery, bus stop 200 yards away with good service to Keswick during the day. Nice walks, lovely gardens, super staff- couldn't ask for aynthing more. Thanks for a great weekend Scafell Hotel

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Scafell Hotel is a wonderful Country House Hotel located in the very heart of Borrowdale, considered by many as England's finest valley, surrounded by mighty fells, tranquil meadows and crystal clear waters. A paradise for the walker and a perfect centre from which to visit other parts of the Lake District. The Hotel is situated almost at the foot of Great Gable and the Scafell Massif, and is regarded one of the Lake District's renowned headquarters for climbers and hill walkers. Keen anglers will appreciate the Scafell Hotel, as there is excellent fly fishing on the River Derwent and in Derwentwater. Those who are content with gentle rambling or just lazing on restful lawns fringed by trees amidst imposing scenery will be equally happy staying here. Our rooms were fully refurbished during 2010, in a Warm and Rich Country House style with a 'Contemporary Twist' perfect for setting the scene for a peaceful and relaxing break in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. The Restaurant, Lounges and Bar have been tastefully decorated and furnished to retain that all important Country House warmth, allowing for complete relaxation after a great days walking on the Fells, and maybe even a little 'nap' by the fire after a delicious five course Dinner. Under the constant direction of owner's Miles Jessop MBE (Chairman) and Andrew Nelson (Managing Director) the Management and Team of Scafell Hotel offer truly warm and friendly service.
