“Charming hotel”
Reviewed 4 March 2014

Just spent yet another long weekend at the Scafell. As always over the past 20 years since we started coming here, the hotel was very comfortable and welcoming and all the staff helpful, friendly, efficient and professional. We would highly recommend the hotel as it is in such a picturesque and delightful setting with some lovely walks nearby. The meals in the hotel restaurant and the Riverside bar are consistently excellent using high quality ingredients. The whole place has such a lovely ambience that always makes us want to stay longer!

We stayed in this hotel just before Christmas I we had been bought a voucher through Trip advisor. For the price what we got was excellent!
The surrounding area is beautiful and there are lots of brilliant walks(we didnt take advantage of these this time round!)
There is a pub part of the hotel just next door, that is open during the day. This is a 'walkers pub' so quite rustic and not luxurious but it has a log fire so nice and warm and lots of different ales. The actual hotel bar which is a cocktail bar is lovely! And a shame it was closed between 2pm and 6pm as we would have loved to stayed in this one for our drinks.
The room was great. nice and clean and the bathroom was very nice and had a good deep bath.
The restaurant was lovely. We got a 3 course dinner included which was lovely! the waitress was very attentive and the food was really really good. As was the breakfast the next day.
I would def reccomend this hotel and we would love to return! Thank you

My family and I have recently spent two nights in the Scarfell Hotel for my dads birthday. There were 7 of us in total (6 adults and a 16 month old baby) and we couldn't be more comfortable. All three rooms were clean, spacious and beautifully decorated. The food - WOW!! Four courses each night! And the breakfasts were amazing. Laura was fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. She arranged everything that was part of the surprise for the birthday. Ang and Fiona are also wonderful. My parents have stayed a few times and we were all made to feel like part of the family. All in all I would highly recommend the Scarfell Hotel for a quiet relaxing weekend away :)

This is our second visit to this hotel and cannot fault it. Staff, rooms, food and location are wonderful would definitely stay here again. The roaring fires are great to sit front of with a glass after a long day walking.

Room Tip: Rooms are very comfortable and bathroom very modern

My girlfriend and I had the chance to stay in this lovely hotel for one night in February half term. The deal included breakfast and a four course dinner at a very reasonable rate. We'd spent the day in the local town of Keswick, and ventured down to Rosthwaite - a sleepy village on the bottom edge of Derwent water - however if we'd taken the time to read the confirmation email Scafell had kindly sent, we would have realised the most direct road was blocked for maintenance.

So began a lengthy journey over the top of a variety of hills along muddy tracks and single-lane roads. It was a bit dicey going at points, and the Micra didn't like the steeper inclines. However it was all worth it, as the landscape was breathtaking, and afforded us a scenic entry into the settlement.

Upon arrival, the first thing you will notice is the sound of the local river, which the hotel is literally next to. Beyond this there is a feeling of quiet remoteness you will seldom get anywhere else in the country.

The hotel itself I would liken to an old country estate, with fireplaces, grand dining rooms, art work and ticking clocks. The bathrooms were wonderful modern however and the rooms featured all the mod-cons. Sadly there was no internet in the rooms, however in this part of the world I am not suprised.

We got to choose when we ate dinner, and they offered a great variety of country fare. The wine selection was also extensive and decent. The food itself was beautifully cooked, and served with a helpful smile.

I can only imagine how beautiful this quaint resort must be in the summer, as even in the bleak February rain it provided the perfect escape from a busy city life. I could not recommend spending a day (or a week!) there enough.

Room Tip: Ensure the road from Keswick is open, otherwise be prepared for a trek around the hills!

The Scafell Hotel is a wonderful Country House Hotel located in the very heart of Borrowdale, considered by many as England's finest valley, surrounded by mighty fells, tranquil meadows and crystal clear waters. A paradise for the walker and a perfect centre from which to visit other parts of the Lake District. The Hotel is situated almost at the foot of Great Gable and the Scafell Massif, and is regarded one of the Lake District's renowned headquarters for climbers and hill walkers. Keen anglers will appreciate the Scafell Hotel, as there is excellent fly fishing on the River Derwent and in Derwentwater. Those who are content with gentle rambling or just lazing on restful lawns fringed by trees amidst imposing scenery will be equally happy staying here. Our rooms were fully refurbished during 2010, in a Warm and Rich Country House style with a 'Contemporary Twist' perfect for setting the scene for a peaceful and relaxing break in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. The Restaurant, Lounges and Bar have been tastefully decorated and furnished to retain that all important Country House warmth, allowing for complete relaxation after a great days walking on the Fells, and maybe even a little 'nap' by the fire after a delicious five course Dinner.
