“Friendly welcome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2014

Our children booked us into the Scafell hotel for my birthday, as a surprise, and what a lovely one it was. The welcome was warm and friendly, the room was ideal and the dinner in the restaurant was perfect and to top it all the weather was dry and sunny. A perfect weekend

Stayed for 2 nights midweek, hotel was great, service excellent, food was lovely! Was quite a drive to the nearest shop but only because the main road was closed for re surfacing! Would definitely stay again

It's been years since I set foot in the Scafell Hotel, but it's as nice as ever! We loved the cosy lounge and cocktail bar. Real fires, chatty, friendly staff and very well appointed rooms. I would have loved to eat in the restaurant but my travelling companion has a tiny appetite so their set menu would have been money wasted (but it looked good). The pub food, served in the adjacent Riverside Bar, was fine, although a bit light on veggie options. Could anything have been better overall? I don't think so, because we got a great deal on the single rooms (£45 pppn, bed and breakfast). Would love to come back for a longer stay.

A group of friends have enjoyed yet again a lovely weekend in the Lake District. This hotel is what a country house hotel should be. Good food, good accommodation and staff who are interested in providing the visitor with what they want. As we were interested in a certain rugby match that weekend they served our sweet in the Riverside Bar so we would not miss the start of the game! Now that is service. The Riverside Bar is a very useful facility providing an extensive menu for informal dining and has a decent range of beer. We are already looking forward to our visit next year but hope that the scones served for afternoon tea improve as they were not, in my view, up to the hotel's high standards!

We went for a lovely walk and wanted some food and refreshment afterwards but unfortunately on entering this hotel and asking if we could have some tea etc. next to the fire in the completely empty lounge were told in a very rude manner that we had to use the riverside bar where there was a machine for drinks. Now we had been walking but had removed boots etc. so were not going to contaminate anything. As a afterthought the lady asked if we were residents (we weren't). Needless to say we took our business elsewhere. Also beware if you park in the so called car park which we did and paid - but the horrendous potholes - cars will be severely damaged if this is not sorted - shame on you.

Stayed here for a weekend break with a voucher. Staff very nice, hotel was lovely we had room 3 that was very nice. . Our evening meal on the first night was 1st class and on the second night we had a bar snack in the walkers bar. We caught the bus outside the hotel into keswick that cost £13 for 2 return. Nice log fires burning and everybody was very friendly. I would highly reccomend the hotel for a weekend away. Angus n gill ..

Room Tip: All rooms looked good .

Booked this through Travelzoo it was much cheaper obviously ,the dinner is a set menu of 5 courses and costs £35 alone. We stayed an extra night and on the second night went into the pub where the food was lovely and good value, and real wood burning fires , as is the lounge in the hotel. The hotel itself is really nice but rather isolated in a very small community ,for example no shop or pub so you either have to drive out or stay in for eats etc in the hotel. As mentioned the dinner was 5 courses and far too much for my wife and myself ( both 70 plus years old) and unless very much mistaken no a la carte just the set menu which at full price is a tad expensive for a couple for several nights BUT the food is fantastic and the choice and quality for breakfast is superb . The best part about the place though is the staff probably the most friendliest people. In the bar,the restaurant ,reception the loveliest of people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Lovely location with plenty of walks and Keswick just up the road. We did find out they have their own deals so suggest you get their web site to check.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Scafell Hotel is a wonderful Country House Hotel located in the very heart of Borrowdale, considered by many as England's finest valley, surrounded by mighty fells, tranquil meadows and crystal clear waters. A paradise for the walker and a perfect centre from which to visit other parts of the Lake District. The Hotel is situated almost at the foot of Great Gable and the Scafell Massif, and is regarded one of the Lake District's renowned headquarters for climbers and hill walkers. Keen anglers will appreciate the Scafell Hotel, as there is excellent fly fishing on the River Derwent and in Derwentwater. Those who are content with gentle rambling or just lazing on restful lawns fringed by trees amidst imposing scenery will be equally happy staying here. Our rooms were fully refurbished during 2010, in a Warm and Rich Country House style with a 'Contemporary Twist' perfect for setting the scene for a peaceful and relaxing break in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. The Restaurant, Lounges and Bar have been tastefully decorated and furnished to retain that all important Country House warmth, allowing for complete relaxation after a great days walking on the Fells, and maybe even a little 'nap' by the fire after a delicious five course Dinner. Under the constant direction of owner's Miles Jessop MBE (Chairman) and Andrew Nelson (Managing Director) the Management and Team of Scafell Hotel offer truly warm and friendly service.
