“Not great first impressions”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

Contrary to some of the other reviews of this hotel I am afraid we didn't give it the chance. My husband had walked ahead of myself and out two children. We struggled to find the way in and had to walk round to the far side to a rather unobvious entrance. Along corridors and past an empty reception not a soul was seen. Eventually found the bar with my husband enjoying a pint. He had the sunday lunch menus ready but they weren't very inspiring and at nearly £20 a head I was ready to head to the exit especially as upon our arrival the barman pointed out that walking shoes were not allowed in the restaurant. Interior is dated and unappealing with air of an old peoples home. We went outside to have our drink and although had a look at the Riverside menu after we had looked in that bar to see only one other family and a lone gentleman in their on a Sunday when everywhere else is booked up we decided to quit and left. The Riverside bar smelt of stale beer as well. We had looked forward to this visit but left feeling very disappointed that it had not inspired us to stay to eat what may well have turned out to be a great meal

Once again we have enjoyed the outstanding service of the Scafell team, all members of staff deserve a special mention; from our arrival at reception, drinking in the bar(both the cocktail and The Riverside), to feasting in the restaurant and relaxing in our room, we could not have been better cared for. The service and attention to detail make for a truly relaxing stay and as a result we have become quite frequent visitors, our two Goldens also appreciate the pampering from both staff and guests. Looking forward to our next visit- we have already booked!

We ate twice in the Riverside Bar at this hotel. Each time the food was delicious and plentiful. Just great after a days walking. We weren't staying at the hotel but enjoyed the hospitality nonetheless. A great Borrowdale welcome.

The hotel provided excellent accommodation in a big and quiet river view room. Food in Riverside Bar was perfect. We took good rest after hard walking day in mountains. The hotel is worth to stay here more than one day.

Great overnight stay. A bit expensive but you get what you pay for. The breakfast was amazing, great choice and quality. The room and bathroom were equipped to a high standard. The bar food was excellent too. We were there for the fell race which the hotel also sponsors. Was great.

Just returned from a fabulous weekend at Scafell Hotel. This is our second visit having previously visited in June last year. Our family room was modern, clean and maintained to a very high standard. The bathroom was spacious and clean with extra large bath towels and a very powerful shower. We ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel restaurant and lunch in the Riverside Bar. The food was fabulous but the highlight for us on both visits was the way our children were treated by the restaurant staff. They took time to chat with them and made them feel very welcome. This hotel has become a favourite with our family and we will no doubt visit again very soon. Keep up the great work Team Scafell!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Scafell Hotel is a wonderful Country House Hotel located in the very heart of Borrowdale, considered by many as England's finest valley, surrounded by mighty fells, tranquil meadows and crystal clear waters. A paradise for the walker and a perfect centre from which to visit other parts of the Lake District. The Hotel is situated almost at the foot of Great Gable and the Scafell Massif, and is regarded one of the Lake District's renowned headquarters for climbers and hill walkers. Keen anglers will appreciate the Scafell Hotel, as there is excellent fly fishing on the River Derwent and in Derwentwater. Those who are content with gentle rambling or just lazing on restful lawns fringed by trees amidst imposing scenery will be equally happy staying here. Our rooms were fully refurbished during 2010, in a Warm and Rich Country House style with a 'Contemporary Twist' perfect for setting the scene for a peaceful and relaxing break in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. The Restaurant, Lounges and Bar have been tastefully decorated and furnished to retain that all important Country House warmth, allowing for complete relaxation after a great days walking on the Fells, and maybe even a little 'nap' by the fire after a delicious five course Dinner. Under the constant direction of owner's Miles Jessop MBE (Chairman) and Andrew Nelson (Managing Director) the Management and Team of Scafell Hotel offer truly warm and friendly service.
