Excellent services, wholesome tasty food, comfortable quiet bedroom wonderful conversation in the cosy lounge, whilst enjoying a after dinner coffee and cake. After the long walk from Ennerdale bridge, my wife myself and our dog Max were all pleased to reach the royal oak. We were given a friendly welcome our bags had already been delivered to our room and the young man gave us a full explanation of the facilities as he showed us to our room. These included a small bar that provided me with refreshing pint of beer there is also a TV room which has wifi for those who need there electronic fix. I personally like the single meal option and on both occasions we have stayed the food has be wonderful . If you want Bells and whistles bright lights fancy menus stick to the big city. This place is a little haven for those who love the lakes,

Room Tip: Room 10is ideal if you have a dog . You can get straight out the back door

Thank you for your very positive review, you obviously 'get' the Royal Oak ethos and appreciate our slightly quirky way of operating which suits many but not all. We hope to see you again soon.

As far removed from the chains as you can get! A historic building, in a really great location. A smallish room, but this is what comes with being built a very long time ago.
We loved the dinner gong at 7.30 and all the guests sitting down to eat the same dishes together in the dining room. Home cooking along with lots of freshly cooked vegetables and tasty - just what we wanted after a long day on the C2C. Do ring ahead to check what the menu will be - I guess there would be an alternative if you don't like it. Good value wine list.
Friendly helpful staff and our bag had been taken up to our room. Other guests very friendly and chatty too.

We have just returned from yet another brilliant stay at the Royal Oak Hotel in Rosthwaite. The hotel, with its good home cooking and very friendly atmosphere, is the perfect and unique place to stay to explore exquisite Borrowdale and the rest of the Lakes. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

Cosy and friendly, this traditional Lake District hotel is set in a lovely village. We only stayed one night, while walking the Cumbria Way, but we were well looked after, with delicious home made food - leek and potato soup, Cumberland sausage, and a delicious black currant ice cream and merangue desert, all clearly home made and full of flavour. Our bedroom was simply furnished, but clean and cofortable, with ensure bathroom. Thanks for your welcome, and for welcoming our dog too.

We had a twin room for two nights b&b in perfect weather so could make the most of the fabulous walking on the doorstep. The room itself was very clean, quiet and quite comfortable, good wardrobe space, but my mattress sagged a biit, the shower was hard to control and there was no TV in the room. The service was excellent however. We were welcomed with a complimentary cuppa and our host took extra trouble to provide a salad instead of bread in our packed lunches each day. Breakfast was well-cooked and low-fat but the portions could have been bigger. All in all a very enjoyable stay.

We met some great people during our 3 day stay in this friendly, comfy inn. It's classy in an understated way that has obviously been lost on some. Selfishly that's a good thing, as they won't be back! Food was fab - best Bakewell Tart ever. We will be back with Annie & Wilf - thank you.
