“Fantastic hotel stay. ”
Reviewed 22 June 2014 via mobile

My stay at the Courtyard downtown Detroit was one of my best hotel stays yet. The beds were more comfortable than my own at home. I slept like a baby. The rooms were spacious and everything was kept clean. If I return to Detroit I will stay here every time. It is a skywalk away from the Renaissance Center and people mover also which is quite convenient. I also had a great view from my room. Definitely recommend this hotel.

Positives: The Detroit PeopleMover literally runs through the hotel building. It's 75 cents and pretty much takes you in a clockwise loop all around downtown. The bed/pillows were comfortable. The shower was hot and had good pressure. The check-in staff was very friendly and gave us a nice river-view/downtown view on the 11th floor.

Negatives: Things were a little worn. I really noticed the dust ruffle around the beds was frayed and falling apart. Bright blue carpet looked a little dated. You could also hear the PeopleMover when in your room. It does shut down at midnight though, but starts up again around 6 I believe.

Overall: I'd definitely stay here again. It was so convenient going to and from the Tigers game (or anywhere else downtown!)

Room Tip: Ask for a river view or downtown view on a high floor.

Thank you for your compliments to our staff and location of the hotel.

Your feedback has triggered my curiosity with the People Mover as it passes my office on the fourth floor all day without any distraction. We don’t get many comments on this but I will listen more closely over the next couple weeks as I’m walking the property.

We look forward to your return, and Go Tigers!

Sincerely,

The location was very convenient and allowed us to get anywhere around the city. The people mover location at the site was a bonus. However, as other have noted, the air conditioning was poor and it never cooled the room down even after we had maintenance come look at it. The safe was also problematic and would not lock. We got it fixed and then it stopped working again. The bathroom was also in need of a makeover and if you didn't giggle the handle, the toilet would just keep running.
On the bright side, most of the staff were very nice especially Calvin the maintenance man.
I would stay again but with much lower expectations.

Dear BAppelt1,

Thank you for your review and considering our hotel for a return visit in the future.

Based on your feedback we were able to address your concerns and prevent another guest from experiencing the same. We have experienced sporadic issues with the heating and cooling temperature control following our recent rejuvination project, and has been addressed with new thermostats.

I will share your review to Calvin personally, and appreciate the overall staff service compliment.

Sincerely,

Better than the 3 I gave it, but surely! not a 4. Good location, enclosed access to RenCen, but you are staying in the poor relation. Room temp could not get and hold cool, decor and bath nothing special (tho perfectly adequate). On an odd note: no shampoo, but 3 other bottles of stuff! Bed so-so, but might have been the temp problem again. Hotel is quiet / streets surrounding it are not and noise does bleed in. Super fast elevators - yea! Nice size room and mine had a microwave (none of the other 4 rooms we rented did). Irritation: on day 2 I headed back from convention for a nap. Housekeeping came at 1 something and woke me. Lady got a bit of an attitude; told her I would be gone in 5 minutes and she never came back to make up the room. Well, that was your choice, your lost tip and this mention. I would not seek out the experience again. Good value though - on our discounted rate.

Green Features: when they simply don't make up the room at all that's certainly eco-friendly.

Dear Scott,

I’m sorry we fell short on your housekeeping service. I would appreciate the opportunity to follow up if you are able to provide more details including your last name and date of departure. We did identify an isolated calibration issue with several thermostats that were recently upgraded, and assume you may have occupied one of those rooms. The issue has been corrected.

I look forward to your response so we can personally address your feedback. Please e-mail cy.dtwdc.gm@marriott.com or call 313.222.7700 and ask for me.

Thank you for your feedback.

I generally stay at the Ren across the street but could not get a room for that date. Was pleasantly surprised staying at the Courtyard! Was in short walking distance to a concert we were attending at St. Andrews Hall. Room was very clean and the staff top notch.Excellent hotel!

just stayed for 3 nights, at he Courtyard by Marriott Detroit Downtown -for a Conference across the street at the conencted Renaissance Center.

PAID the $159./conference rate, but was disappointed in the state of the hotel ESPECIALLY compared to our experiences in Marriott's around the world, this property was in poor condition compared to all others (actually surprised it had the Marriott name)

overall tired and shabby property appearance
our room had a king and a sofabed, but the mattress was ridiculous: thin,, flimsy and TORN, so we had to order a roll-away bed to use

the air-conditioning/ fan did not work, and it actually had a temporary sign attached to it stating that it woukd NOT operate during "shoulder season"? (we stayed May 17-19), and that we should "open the windows" for ventilation....

staff was very friendly and courteous

bar / restaurant in the lobby was awful, as was the breakfast experience

Room Tip: DO NOT use the sofabed

Dear VicEdee,

I’m sorry your experience with us was average. Our chief engineer sent you an e-mail yesterday requesting additional information as we also received your comments through our Guest Satisfaction Survey.

We have addressed the sofa mattress and apologize for not noticing the condition prior to your arrival. Our air conditioning is functioning properly, as is the fan mode in the guest room you occupied. We couldn’t find any record of a maintenance request during your stay, so I’m assuming the sign you referenced may have been confusing.

Thank you again for your feedback. Your e-mail reply would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

The staff & location were excellent. It got a little warm in the room,& could have been more quiet, but the beds were comfy, the room was large & bright. The adjoining room was loud as our neighbours still wanted to party until the wee hours. That is not the hotels fault though, just rude people which you can't control.
