Hotel was clean and room was good. The door opened the opposite way which was different. I thought it was good hotel and would stay here again. Location was good and there was a Starbucks in the lobby.

Just passed through for one night on the consultant circuit. I like Marriotts generally, not least because I derived Delta miles from my stay. If your client is in the RenCen, this is a haute convenient location. The staff at this property are extremely friendly and helpful. The place itself borders on the down-at-heel: worn carpet, dirty windows, etc. Excellent breakfast buffet.

This hotel has a great location on the waterfront but the standard of service is not always what you expect of a good hotel. The rooms are small because of the round shape of the building and are getting a little tied now. The hotel is advertising that there will be a renovation soon but the money they are about to spend wont fix the rooms to a standard I would expect. Excellent for conferences.

There was 9 of us staying here for one night on a saturday night. We had reserved 3 rooms, 2 with 2 beds and one with a king bed. When we went to check in.. at 3pm... they gave us 3 rooms with 1 king bed in each room. They told us that what you reserve is not guaranteed. How do they expect 4 adults to share one king bed. We were not allowed a roll away bed in the rooms either. After some time they finally figured they could give us 2 hospitality suites since there is 2 pull out couches in them and 1 king room. Good but not great. Yes it was a busy weekend in the city but when you show up to check in at 3pm.. check in time , and they tell you that is all they have.. not acceptable.
Aside from this the hotel itself is quite large. Great food court downstairs as well as starbucks. There is also access to the people mover right at the hotel. Ordered pizza from room service and totally worth the 20 bucks for a large pizza a 4 drinks.
We usually stay at the courtyard across the street and think that is where I will try and go again next year.

I stayed here 2 nights on a weekend. Overall, I really enjoyed this hotel, but unfortunately the cleanliness of the rooms was not up to par. For the price you pay to stay here, it should be. Our room was incredibly dusty....dust and dust bunnies covering the bedside table and lamp. I had to move the bed to look for something, and it was just not clean around the bed at all. Hair and dust. Gross. There were a lot of random hairs on the sheets. The sheets were clean, so they were from the drier, but it was still gross. Bedskirts stained and needed to be replaced. I was tempted to give my review 2 stars because of these issues, but enjoyed the rest of my stay so much that I'll give it three. Splurge for a higher floor, you won't regret it, the views are beautiful. Staff were all very friendly. Room service surprisingly reasonably priced and actually tasted pretty good. Skip the valet and instead do self-park in the Beaubian parking structure, $15 per day instead of $25 plus tip, and no wait for your car. Yes, the rooms were a little outdated but that didn't bother me as much as the housekeeping issues did. Apparently they're about to undertake a massive renovation. I'll come here again, after the renovation, in hopes that it will inspire them to get their housekeeping act together.

Room Tip: Get a high floor, river view.

Spouse, adult son and I just completed one-night stay here after Detroit Marathon, using certificate from Visa for free night. Had very nice room on 63rd floor with city view. (So much better than river view, IMHO, as city is lighted up at night. River view features Caesar's Casino in Windsor and a swathe of low-rise housing.) Room had two double beds (not queens), flat screen TV, safe, typical very small Marriot bathroom (but there was a tub.) Bed was comfortable, water was hot, drains worked, towels were decently sized. Hotel personnel were all professional, efficient, and cheerful. The Volt Bar was lively on a Sunday night, and had lots of comfortable seating.

Small quibbles: why do hotels ask us to reuse towels but neglect to provide adequate towel racks? Also, why is security peep-hole placed so high on the door that anyone, like me, shorter than 5'7" is unable to access this important safety feature, even if standing on tip-toe?

As to the building itself: The discordance between exterior and interior must be seen to be believed. The Renaissance Center is all shiny, vertical glass and metal outside. That makes the interior all the more shocking for its gloomy, dystopian, low-ceilinged, dark grey, reinforced concrete walls, and inconveniently placed escalators. It could be the set for an outer space sci-fi horror movie. (Anyone who has been to the Bonaventure in LA is familiar with the look - same architect.) Grim, grim, grim.

Room Tip: City view shows Detroit's buildings at their best. Lots of neon at nght. Nice.

We were very impressed with the Detroit Marriott. We were unable to confirm a 2 double bed room when we booked-very busy due to a skating event and the Detroit Marathon. However an email to the hotel the week before got a quick response confirming our request. We also got a refrigerator for $25 total for the 3 nights we stayed. We drove directly up to the hotel entrance and got cheerful assistance unloading our stuff. We had the option of using valet, $25, or self-parking directly across from the hotel. $20 per night, with in-out privileges and maybe a cheaper rate if you checked with the manager. We didn't notice the sign until we were leaving. No need to drag luggage across the street as another poster indicated. Checkin was quick and easy and we were upgraded to a high floor river view room. Very clean and nice.

We had a minor problem one day, with only enough towels for 2 when there were 3 in the room. Within 15 minutes of calling the front desk, we got 2 sets of extra towels, with a purple ribbon tied around the washcloths! Another day we got only decaf coffee and missing shampoo. Front desk gave us an ample supply of both.

The peoplemover was easy to locate within the Renaissance Center, not confusing as some have indicated. It was also an easy 15-20 minute walk to the Joe Louis Arena, with Cobo Center and a park with impressive sculptures a bit closer.

Only downside was lack of casual restaurants in the immediate area. The food court in the Ren Center was easy to locate but only had a few places open, the local Greek food being the best. Subway was ok but with surly staff who got our take-out order wrong and I had to go back to get missing food items. Also a McDonalds and Starbucks open but generally hours seem to be focused on office workers, with early closings. Volt restaurant and bar in the hotel was nice but noisy and not conducive to a family group. Small portions for sharing were very good.

Room Tip: request high floor river view-definitely check with hotel itself to confirm any special request. My...
