Owner description: American Jewelry and Loan American Jewelry and Loan is owned by Leslie "Les" Gold, the son of a pawnbroker who once owned Sam's Loans, a now-defunct pawnshop on Michigan Avenue in Detroit. Les first opened American Jewelry at the Green Eight Shopping Center on 8 Mile Road in Oak Park in 1978, moving to its present location in 1993.The Gold family and the daily operations of the store are the subject of the truTV reality show 'Hardcore Pawn'. This flagship show has broken numerous audience records and recently celebrated its 100th episode. Visitors are often surprised to learn that the store still operates as a full-service pawn shop and that members of the Gold family are still heavily involved in the daily operations in the store despite their busy filming and appearance schedules.

“Good Pawn Shop”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

It is a pawn shop as expected. Worth a visit if you are in the area like we were on a busy saturday afternoon. A large selection of jewelry and electronics. Place is the same as it looks on tv. Les and Seth were in the store and we got our picture taken with them. They were very friendly and cordial. Greeted us with a nice to meet you that seemed genuine. Good visit overall.

“Not bad if you are a fan of the show”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

I have been to many reality television show locations. If you do not expect that the shows make places look larger and better that they are, then you do not understand television. This place was just like shown in the TV show. It was a Saturday afternoon and Seth was working. I did not expect any of the three to be there. He was working the jewelry counter and was very friendly. They have t-shirts for sale but they are $25.000 each. As far as people complaining that they are in a bad location, they are a pawn shop and they are usually not in the best areas.

“Smaller than on TV”
Reviewed 23 February 2014 via mobile

While in Detroit I decided to stop In and check it out. Was shocked to find it much smaller than it appears on tv. The prices were in the high side. They were filming the day I was there and the scenes are definitely staged. It's nothing more than an ordinary pawn shop.

“Judge for yourself”
Reviewed 16 February 2014

Drove up from Ohio today 2/15/14. Place is as it looks on TV. Took wife, daughter,& her high school friend. Les, & Seth were there, Ashley was off. Les, & Seth we're very willing to have their pictures taken with my daughter, and her friend. They were friendly, cordial, excellent business people. We spent a few dollars there, the whole time all of the salespeople were very nice.
One person went out mad because no trouble started, as if the only reason he went in was to watch people yelling at the Golds.
We had a pleasant time there. Next time we will take our grade school aged son. We didn't know what to expect.
Thank you Gold family, you are a class act.
