Holiday Inn Express Detroit - Downtown
Ranked #17 of 33 Hotels in Detroit
Reviewed 4 June 2012

I recently stayed at the HIE Detroit Downtown with a race team. The hotel is located in a convenient location. There were a few hiccups during our stay, but the staff worked hard to remedy the situations as soon as possible. For example, one day we had to wait a very long time for our car to be brought down from valet (Valet parking is one of the only parking options at this hotel) This was partly due to the fact that several race teams were staying at the hotel and all of them needed to leave at about the same time. The rooms are OK. The housekeeping was a little spotty. One day they forgot to clean our room entirely. The next day they forgot to restock the shampoo and conditioner.

Thank you for your understanding of the hiccups that occurred during your stay. We appreciate you taking the time to realize this is not the normal way things are done here. I wish we had been more prepared in all facets of your stay, but I am glad we were able to accommodate you and win back your trust. See you next time the Grand Prix is in town!!! I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Downtown Detroit. I was staying overnight for a Tigers game. This place was a great surprise. The person who checked us in was great. She told us how to get to the ballpark and what some of the city hotspots were. The room was very clean and quite comfortable.

When we checked out the Manager Rachel was very kind and invited us back. She made us feel like family in a way. I really like that in a hotel. Definitely returning here!

Room Tip: The Big City Bar attached to the hotel is a cool place to have some drinks before and after the game...

Thank you for the kind words about our hotel. I appreciate you mentioning what a great job I do, but the recognition is really not necessary. I do it because it makes me happy to see a guest smile and enjoy themselves at our home away from home. Thank you for staying with us and we look forward to exceeding your expectations once again. I was worried when I read some of the reviews that this hotel would be too far of a walk to Comerica Park. It was a perfect walk! We stayed here in early May for a Tiger's game. My husband and I brought our 3 children and most definitely enjoyed our stay! Check in was quick and painless. The valet parking was great. We stayed on the 17th floor right next to the pool, but we never heard any noise (although there were always children in the pool). Breakfast was excellent--plenty of choices for everyone. We used the shuttle to go to dinner, but it really wasn't necessary as it was right next to Comerica Park, which is within walking distance. Our 3 year old even had no problem walking to the game and walking back to the hotel afterwards. I would definitely stay here again. I did get a great discount because I go to Wayne State University. Try to book this with some kind of discount or join their rewards program. The listing on Kayak was way more than I paid. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: Skip the shuttle and walk to Comerica Park or Ford Field. It's a lovely walk. We stopped at th...

The staff was very pleasant and professional. The valet service was awesome also. I was able to request to have my car available at a specific time and each day it would be outside waiting.

Room Tip: Make sure to request a room away from the pool and exercise area as it can be slightly noisy.

The staff was so friendly and helpful. This was a one-night stop over. I would like to compliment the valet staff (especially Moe and David) as they made our trip so much easier. We were in town to renew a passport for an upcoming trip. The hotel is 2 blocks from the facility, hence why we selected this hotel. The guys ran out to my car to get my coat in the morning, brought the car around when we had to check out but when they found our business still wasn't complete they offered to let us keep the car there until we were finished. It was such a relief for us to not worry about where we would park.

The entire staff was friendly and accommodating throughout our short stay. It made things so much easier with their over the top service commitment.

In addition, the room was clean and comfortable with a refrigerator, microwave and popcorn in our goody bag!

Thank you to all!

This downtown hotel is in close walking distance of the COBO Center and other downtown attractions. Friendly staff, comfortable rooms, good hot breakfast daily and a separate bar/restaurant next door, (Big City Grille)
Too many smokers allowed at the entrance of the hotel makes a bad impression. Television stations did not match the in-room guide so you surf the channels forever to find your desired show.
Overall, a worthwhile hotel when staying in downtown Detroit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view and a king size bed.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. While you were here we were going through a Direct TV upgrade and the channel guides have been fixed. We also have moved the smoking area down the sidewalk further to avoid a cloud of smoke when you walk into the building. I appreciate that you took the time to make us aware the you were dissatisfied with these aspects of your stay. I also thank you for the kind words regarding our staff and facilities.
