Holiday Inn Express Detroit - Downtown
Ranked #17 of 33 Hotels in Detroit
Reviewed 1 April 2014

We stayed at the Downtown Detroit Holiday Inn Express on Sunday, March 30th and Monday, March 31st. Monday was Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers, which is a very huge deal in Motown. We reserved a king suite (has a kitchen). Specifically, our room was 730, which is at the end of the hallway and looks down upon the front entrance to the hotel. We found the room quiet enough, though it was only on the 7th floor.

The building was made into a Holiday Inn Express—it wasn’t built as one. The actual building (and it’s elevators) are much older. So I give a lot of leeway for slower elevators and smaller bathrooms. The building is right at the intersection of Washington and Michigan Avenue. The Book Cadillac is across the street; Lafayette (and/or) American Coney Island are about 150 yards away. The walk to Comerica Park is about 3/8ths of a mile. It is an easy walk and there are various routes you can take, each with its own points of interest.

We found the room to be clean and ready for us. Check-in was fast and easy. We paid a total of 411 dollars for the two nights. The outer room is spacious; the bathroom is small. The tub and shower surround was an insert and the escutcheon and spout hadn’t been sealed or caulked in any way.

The television is a flat screen. There wasn’t an HD signal to the set, just standard definition.
Breakfast was included in the price and commenced around 0630. The first day included bacon, the second included sausage patties. The breakfast area was clean and orderly. Instead of a waffle-maker (which are fun), they had an automatic pancake maker (which is nothing short of magical). It would roll out two pancakes in one minute.

All in all, our stay was pleasant and we may reserve rooms there again for the 2015 Opening Day.

Room Tip: Room 730 is a king suite (with a pullout couch). The room was spacious and quiet. It is at the end...

We spent Sunday March 30-Tuesday April 1, 2014 at Holiday Inn Express Detroit. We were there for the Detroit Tiger home opener. The staff at the hotel were not only professional, but genuinely friendly. They offered a free shuttle that took us to and from anywhere in the downtown Detroit area and free valet parking at the hotel. If you did not want to use the shuttle, the People mover is across the street. The breakfast was hot and plentiful with a lot of choices. The rooms were very clean. We will definitely stay again. Within walking distance to Cobo, Joe Louis and the Riverfront. Short walk to Comerica and the Fox.

I was just here a few weeks ago, we had a cheer competition at the COBO and it was a great walking distance,. also loved that we could walk downtown to close dining areas. The rooms were nice, one thing I didn't like was the pool was way up on the 17th floor, but other wise we really enjoyed it and would stay here again.

Rooms are clean. Wireless is terrible - could not connect to watch Netflix. Breakfast was as expected - nothing special but the bananas were green, some of the scrambled eggs were crusty. Staff were friendly. Valet parking fast and efficient. We walked to Joe Louis and back no problem.

I spent one night at this hotel while on a business trip. The staff was amazing. Very much into customer service. I would especially like to call out one of the valet staff for being a huge help, his name is Joe. He made sure that I was wherever I needed to be on time! Great job! I also enjoyed the attached bar/restaurant, however, it would be nice if you could charge to your room. Thanks for a great stay!

My son and I attended a Detroit Red Wings game last night and stayed here. The location was great; the service was fine, the room was clean, large, well appointed with a microwave oven, refrigerator, and a king-size bed. There was also a nice pool on the 17th floor. The complementary breakfast consisted bacon, sausage, pancakes, cereal, rolls, bagels fruit, and more. The wi-fi was slow because the hotel was full that night, but the manager said that they were going to upgrade their service. The valet service was fine. The bed was very comfortable with great pillows. One of the features that I really appreciated is that each table lamp has an electrical outlet on its base, so their is no need to crawl around looking for an outlet down by the floor. A small feature, but much appreciated by me.

Room Tip: My room was on the sixth floor facing the front, and I heard no noise--from the street, the hallway...

My husband and I had a great time the 2 nights we stayed at this hotel. The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. Q as she likes to be called, made sure that our request for extra towels was received quickly. We did have trouble with the tub draining out, but again Q had it taken care of, with our permission, while we were out for the day. Q seemed genuinely consider that we enjoyed our stay. While at the hotel we were able to use the shuttle bus to take us around town, so we didn't have to drive and try to find a parking space which was nice. The valet crew was also very friendly when picking us up or taking us out. It was nice waking up to a smiling friendly face at breakfast. Joyce who served breakfast in the was very pleasant each morning. I am thankful for the dedication of Cheryl, who went next door to get me a spoon, when the keys to the kitchen could not be found. We truly enjoyed our stay. The room was very nice and the bed was very comfortable. For a weekend get-away, I'm sure we will visit again.
