“had a good time, little pricey”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

The GM car display was a good time, stayed at Marriott, very nice, but over priced for Detroit. Had drinks at Volt... great vibe, service was only o.k. Dinner at Andiamo Riverfront, incredible.

“Free Tour. 72nd floor amazing. Remainder of tour, bleh.”
Reviewed 21 August 2013

The GM Renaissance Center offers FREE tours twice daily, 12pm and 2pm. We participated in the 12pm tour last Friday. I had read that the tour visited the top of the Ren Center, the tallest building in Michigan, and figured the views would be outstanding.

Our tour got of to a rocky start due to our tour guide. We immediately noticed that she wasn't well seasoned. She repeatedly used phrases such as "Oh, I forgot to tell you..." and "Sorry I didn't mention...", etc. She seemed to lack confidence and was excessively worried about not doing a good enough job. This may have led to her over compensating and telling us the most mundane things about the Ren Center. One example: "And over here we have the Cleaners. This is where you can get your clothes cleaned". Really? Its almost like she was a sales realtor and we were prospective business owners looking for new office space.

After what seemed like an hour of extremely boring and useless information (which was probably 20 minutes but seemed like forever), we finally made it to the elevator. The elevator has a glass enclosure that faces the river and Canada, providing unbelievable views while moving upward. We got off on the 72nd floor which was a fine dining restaurant. The entire floor had 360 degree floor-to-ceiling windows, providing spectacular views. Everyone was snapping photos non-stop. This is what we had came for. Once again, our tour guide over-explained the sights, pointing out at least 60-70 buildings and roads, and trying to give information on each. I can appreciate the effort, but it was just too much. Maybe highlight 10 things and that's it. It was clear that everyone in the group tuned her out and started walking throughout the floor on their own.

The group made their way back to the elevator and headed down. The tour continued with more of the same sales pitch theme, and one person departed early. We left the tour a few seconds after that, having accomplished what we came for, and not learning anything of consequence.

In summary, the Ren Center top floor is 5 stars, while the rest of the tour was 1 star, thus the 3 star overall rating.

“Good Views”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

My husband works here and it has beautiful views of the riverfront. There is a lot of shops/restaurants within with great views as well. It is Detroit so you must always be aware of your surroundings regardless if it is riverfront or not.

It is a nice building. Most everything is very expensive, as it caters to white collar business. There is not much to see if not visiting during business hours. However it is accessible from the riverfront during non business hours

“Not a very business-like environment.”
Reviewed 28 July 2013

The Ren Cen is a nice place to relax with plenty of choices when it comes to shopping. I stayed at the Marriott for a while, and I've found it too be too much of a hangout for unruly people. My kids wanted to walk around, so we went to the food court. There were half dressed young girls dancing to loud derogatory music, young men with their pants down yelling obscenities across the court (one tried to flirt with my 14-year old daughter), and even people with their shirts and shoes off, sleeping in makeshift beds made from two or more chairs (making it hard to find a place to sit). It's a shame that in order to have a good time, you have to stay in your hotel room.
