Review of Wharton Center

In general Wharton Center in East Lansing, Michigan is a good venue with acceptable acoustics. If you want to pay $5 to park, there is an attached ramp, otherwise good luck finding a spot, as the center is located on the campus at Michigan State University, where parking is hard to find, highly monitored by campus police and not conveniently located. By design, the auditorium itself has no center aisle. If you get to your seat timely, be ready to look at plenty of fannies passing, as shows often do not start on time. In addition, the auditorium is usually on the cool side, so no spaghetti-strap dresses here. The offerings are balanced and the house staff helpful. However, watch out for the box office personnel. Occasionally, errors have been made on my subscription order. This will not be admitted, no apology offfered and one is left wondering if fees are correct. One wants to say, "Lighten up box office."

Wharton has a variety of shows each year from their broadway series. We have enjoyed every one we have attended.

The Wharton Center, located on the campus of Michigan State University, is truly a premiere concert venue. It offers a wide variety of excellent attractions ranging from classical music, to dance, both ballet and folk, to major jazz artists, to the highest quality Broadway touring productions. All of this takes place in a two theaters, a large 2500 seat main hall, and a smaller 600 seat thrust stage hall. There is not a bad seat in either hall. Seats are comfortable, restrooms are plentiful and the ambiance of the Center is perfect for an enjoyable experience. Not only are the programs enjoyed by local residents but the Center draws from a wide geographic area. Last season I was particularly impressed by the incredible production of War Horse. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival does a residency through the Center. Their season's events can be found on their website. Take advantage.

Great seats, no matter where you sit. Biggest complaint is the parking and the amount of time it takes to get out of the lot after a performance.
