To be fair, one could probably argue that this property deserves 3 stars, but it is shocking
to me that this is the #1 rated hotel in East Lansing, thus I am giving 2 stars to balance the exuberance of other reviewers.
I will agree that the hotel does have friendly staff, thumbs up for that. And the location is good (adjacent to the Michigan State campus). The rooms are also spacious, and reasonably modern appearing, with full kitchens (I assume throughout).
What I didn't like... The hotel is designed, constructed, maintained, and decorated very cheaply. The exterior of the hotel is dingy. It needs at the very least a couple coats of paint. The walls are VERY thin. We spent a sleepless hour and a half, from 10:30 PM to midnight, listening to our neighbor's toddler do some crazy calisthenics on our ceiling while screaming unintelligibly. The breakfast was poor. I once had an equally poor continental breakfast at the Econo Lodge, in Manistique MI – but the perk there was that I was only paying $60 per night, HALF of what I paid in East Lansing. It is as if the owner of the current incarnation of this hotel has spent as little as possible to disguise a seedy underbelly. My concern is that when it is apparent that corners are being cut in terms of overall design, where else are corners being cut...i.e. hygiene, cleanliness??
