The mating robins greeted us on our arrival. No surprise with the amazing collection of birdhouses that surrounded the property. This House on the Hill, a sanctuary that is not just for the fowl and the tender foot but for all seeking a little respite.
The House on the Hill boasts of a serenity that would be hard to match. Overlooking a quaint little lake, this 100-year old B&B lies nestled in the woods just a few miles from the shores of Lake Michigan. It is a treasure with beautifully decorated rooms that offer comfort and quiet. There are no televisions or phones in the rooms to assure the guest the opportunity to truly unwind. If you must watch the big game or catch the news the main house offers the viewing options a garden room.
Breakfast each morning is a wonderful assortment of confections and main dishes. Marci’s culinary creations are all made from fresh, natural and whole ingredients. She spends her week planning the menu, shopping and preparing for the weekend epicurean experience. Friday is bread-making day and Marci enjoys creating original recipes that blend spice, fruit and flour that rise to perfection.
The House of the Hill sits on 53 acres of wooded land, crisscrossed with trails that provide hikers and snowmobilers’ paths to trek and really unwind. The beautiful grounds are home to the local wildlife while an assortment of birds dart through the trees and brush singing their songs of spring. If hiking isn’t your thing, you can just sit in the oak swing and gently rock back and forth taking it all in.
Marci and Phil are the best hosts, seeing to every need and always making you feel welcome. They have tried to accommodate every aspect to make your stay the most enjoyable experience possible, from the warmth of their home and thoughtfully prepared breakfasts to a fridge stocked with refreshments. These are sincere and genuine folks who truly want to create an experience for you to renew and reenergize yourself. They are a blessing.
Before leaving I was already planning my next visit, I just can’t decide which future weekend event I should book. The morel weekend, the Chef Dinner weekend, or one of the other delightful events.
