Owner description: The Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus opened in 1984. Local Holocaust survivors, with community support, founded the museum to teach about the senseless murder of millions, and why everyone must respect and stand up for the rights of others if the world is to prevent future discrimination, hate crime and genocide. As Michigan’s only Holocaust museum, the Holocaust Memorial Center annually touches the lives of more than 85,000 individuals, who leave the museum profoundly affected with a newly acquired sense of history, social responsibility and morality. The Holocaust Memorial Center’s exhibits create a call to action, teaching visitors through the examples of those who risked their lives to save others, and asking its guests to react to contemporary challenges such as racism, intolerance, bullying and prejudice.

“This is the visit you have to make.”
Reviewed 29 October 2013

This is the visit you have to make. In a culture that thinks history began the day they were born, and has little knowledge of the atrocities of Nazism and the political philosophy that was and is rotten to the core, this is the place to got to learn of the wickedness of many without a moral compass. This is our second visit. You find yourself going around in silence like in a cemetery.

“take a teen or an aunt/uncle”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

This is must see in Oakland county. You do NOT have to be Jewish to be deeply moved (and educated) by this museum. Can be seen in 90 minutes. Excellent tour guides . You can explore on your own or join a tour.

“Very intense experience”
Reviewed 22 October 2013

This is a very personal and intense experience. A good general history of the Jewish religion and dispersal experiences move one into the more specific history of the Holocaust. Some very good oral histories presented by survivors - not only of their experiences but also of the questions that remain because they did survive and others did not.

Plan on at least 2 - 3 hours.
