I almost gave the Homestead a "Poor" rating, but upgraded them to "Average" due to the manager making some concessions on a disappointing stay. We just wanted a mini-get away with our dog for two nights and the Homestead is one of several Northern Michigan resorts that offer "pet friendly" accommodations.
We were offered a ground floor room with two beds in Fiddler's Pond, which is right next to the reception building. The room itself was very dark, with dated carpeting and worn bedding. The two side chairs were hard and uncomfortable, the mini fridge froze our bottled water and the bathtub faucet dripped constantly. Sleep quality was poor due to soft, old mattresses and flat pillows. There is no clock in the room, which we thought was pretty odd.
We left in the morning to go to Glen Arbor for breakfast as everything is currently shut down at the Homestead (which they told us about when reserving the room). Upon returning around 11:00 am we noticed there had been no housekeeping, so we proceeded to shower and get ready to go out again. While we were using the bathroom the housekeeping staff knocked on the door. My husband informed the staff member that we would be leaving within 30 minutes and would be out the rest of the afternoon. The response was, "We have a lot of rooms to get to today."
Upon returning at 4:30 PM the room was still not attended to so we attempted three times to dial housekeeping. No calls were picked up. We then called the front desk. She suggested that perhaps they had not cleaned our room because we had a dog and they never enter rooms where there is a dog. (This is really bizarre because we signed a statement on arrival that said we would NOT leave the dog in the room unattended). My husband just said to deliver some fresh towels and we'd be satisfied. The front desk told him he'd have to pick them up himself. So, he's off to get the towels and here comes the housekeeping staff. They said they can't get messages when they're cleaning at the "Pinnacle", so they didn't get our message. I accepted the fresh towels and as they were leaving, my husband arrived with more towels. Crazy situation. Not a big deal, but there should be a better system in place. In most hotels you have a hanging device to put on your doorknob that says "Privacy" or "Housekeeping Needed". Something as simple as that would have helped us.
As indicated, the manager, upon hearing about the issue, gave us a $25 adjustment to our bill, which I thought was acceptable. She seemed genuinely concerned about the confusion.
I would recommend the Homestead overall as a property, but probably only in the "high" season when everything is fully staffed and I'd recommend either staying in a condo overlooking the water or maybe the Inn, which is right on the beach. We had a lovely, though chilly, walk on the beach and enjoyed looking at a piece of a ship wrecked hull that had washed up.
