Very romantic, very kid-friendly, great place to walk, hang, take photos, have lunch. The Japanese botanical garden isn't open until 2014, so I'd wait until then.

It was so admirable of the Meijers to share this attraction with the public. Beautifully landscaped gardens with with major modern works of sculpture, in addition to the indoor gardens. The obligatory Chuilly chandelier and ceiling flower sculpture is there too.

I've visited Washington D.C. a few times and enjoyed my trips to the art museums and sculpture garden out there. Frederik Meijer Gardens blows those out of the water. FM Gardens contains many of the same artists as those I noticed in D.C. but includes their more interesting or impressive examples.

The gardens are well-maintained and easy to travel, even for those in wheelchairs. There are also tram tours for those who cannot (or won't) walk on foot. If you wish to make a short trip with children, the Children's Garden is located immediately adjacent to the main building and can occupy a child's interest for 45 minutes-1 hour easily.

I would recommend bringing sunscreen and a bottle of water when you visit, as many of the paths are very partially shaded. There are water fountains and vendors near the main building in the Gardens.

If you don't mind paying twice, I would recommend making two trips to the Gardens rather than a single trip with the intention to see everything. After a while, your mind becomes overwhelmed, and your feet will become tired.

The only negative to our visit was the weather--cold and rainy. Because of this, we took the tram rather than walk the gardens. The tram does an admirable job of letting you view the garden's highlights while allowing you to stay dry and warm (they have blankets). Both the tram driver and the guide were knowledgable and friendly.

The greenhouses and the indoor art displays should not be missed, but it is the gardens and sculpture park that are the highlight of this venue.

With only a couple of hours before catching a flight home, I decided to indulge in a quick visit to the gardens and sculpture park. Like everything else I visited in grand Rapids on a whirlwind tour lasting just about three days, this was a winner. (I wish Perrins Brewery was listed. I would give that a top billing). But, back to Frederic Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park: if you like the sound of it, just go. Allow yourself much more time than you think you'll need. It is a blast to visit the Children's area (regardless of one's advanced years); have some refreshment in the cafe, and look up,please, at the Chihuly glass on the ceiling. Your neck will ache from the beauty of it all. Just go.
