Christmas Eve was definitely a busy night for Bistro Bella Vita! I made reservations early, knowing that there are not many Grand Rapids restaurants open that evening. We arrived early and took a seat at the bar, where the bartender was friendly and efficient and makes a great cocktail. We were seated at a table shortly thereafter, and the waitress showed up immediately to check on us. I will hit the highlights first, and then move on to our disappointments:
1. The food is delicious. My husband and two adult children ordered the bruchetta appetizer to share and it was one of the best I have had in a restaurant. The calamari appetizer was equally delectable.
2. My husband and daughter ordered the brisket bourgougnon and both of them raved about the preparation of this entree-tender, flavorful, and delicious! Son and I shared the Paella and enjoyed it, as well.
3. Restaurant is lively and energetic.
Here are the low points:
1. The kitchen was extremely slow in getting the food out. Our family is accustomed to enjoying a leisurely meal, however, this was far too slow. At one point we looked at the tables around us and noone had been served food.
2. Charging $1.50 per person for bread is insulting. The prices here are as high or higher than other fine dining restaurants in GR, so for them to charge for bread is excessive.
3. The restaurant is cold and drafty. All of us were cold during our meal, and we noticed other diners asking to be moved in order to try to find a warmer spot in the dining room.
4. Valet parking is expensive-$11.00. You will want to note this, since parking is scarce near the restaurant.
In sum, our family agreed that the food here is delicious, the service is exceedingly slow, and the ambiance has a casual feel, not a fine dining atmosphere, which some might expect from the prices charged.
