Loved the property! Marriott at it's finest! Brand new in late 2007 and the placed just sparkled. Everything is top notch from the welcoming staff to the cleanliness and quality of the room. The Views were gorgeous with huge windows giving an excellent overview of this lovely quiet city.

My husband and I were just getting away from the kids for the night, so we redeemed some Marriott points and decided to go big. Why save up points for tomorrow, when tomorrow may never come. Being a sucker for new and fancy, I choose the JW. Grand Rapids was only 2 hours away, so it was perfect.

We were treated to a room on the concierge floor...oh my...the frivolities of life that we enjoyed! The lounge was huge with a great selection of food and drink, all for free, including the Grey Goose martini I indulged in.

We ordered room service for dinner from one of the Hotel restaurants, fabulous! We rented a "on Demand" movie, grabbed a couple of glasses of wine from the concierge lounge and never left the hotel from check in to check out!

We did work out (great treadmills) okay weight equipment and lounged in one of the two steam rooms. Freshen up with a double headed shower in a beautiful stone shower, packed our bags and headed out...loving our entire stay at the JW!

This is a fantastic hotel, with wonderful rooms (love the hardwood floor entry), great bathrooms, comfortable beds and linens and a top-notch restaurant, six.one.six.

But, while I had a great time at the hotel, one staff member took away from the experience. Cleo (or Cloe?) in the club lounge acts as if guests are a sheer annoyance. While I was there, I saw her make rude comments to numerous guests. One example: A man was merely looking at the food offerings for the evening, and when he moved a plate, Cleo scolded him, "Sir you touched it, you need to take it." The man looked dumbfounded -- he hadn't done anything, and seemed surprised that he would get reprimanded by a staff member.

Still, service in six.one.six was fast and attentive, and front desk staffers were exceedingly gracious. This is certainly the nicest hotel in the Grand Rapids area worthy of the JW name.

We stayed 2 nights and were given a room with a view of the river and the Van Andel Museum. The hotel is new and modern and I especially like the vases with suspended flower displays which greeted you as you enter the hotel lobby.

Together with the clean fresh linens and HD TV, we had quite a relaxing time resting in the room between our trips out in the day. The "Six-One-Six" restaurant also served one of the freshest buffet breakfasts I've had in a long while.

Nice new rooms, decor, linins, oversized bathrooms, new everything, good location within walking distance to anything downtown.

needs to work out some kinks, forgot limes with Coronas with room service, and I forgot my toothpaste and called downstairs and they said there was some for purchase in the little store next to the Starbucks in the lobby for $1. Don't all 4 and 5 star hotels provide any free toiletries that you may have forgotton?

Give it a few months and maybe they will be up to the "JW" standard, valet guys are top notch though

This is an excellent find. I am from the Muskegon area originally and when my wife and I go back to western Michigan to visit family, we generally try to stay over in Grand Rapids. In the past we have stayed at the Amway Grand, or if full, at the Marriott Courtyard, both of which are within a close walk to the JW.

The JW is more characteristic of an eclectic hotel that you might find in a major metropolitan area like NYC or SF. But it offers midwestern friendly service. I stayed here over the Christmas weekend. Used the concierge floor - the 23rd. The rooms are current and clean. Service is exceptional. Food in the restaurants is great. Breakfast was wonderful. About the only thing that was in any way a little bit of a shortcoming was that the workout facility is a little smallish - but not bad.

Comparatively, the Amway Grand is a little too ornate at times and the Courtyard is -well - a Courtyard. Okay, but not great. The JW is just a first class facility in a regional metropolitan center. I would give it 4 and a half stars. It will be very comfortable for a younger group of travelers - under 55. Again, very current.

The one thing that really struck me is how hard the staff tried to impress every guest. They know that they have something special and make their best efforts to meet their own expectations of what a five star should be. They seem very competitive - and again, very midwestern.

All in all, you just can't go wrong with choosing this hotel. Great value, I just can not recommend it highly enough. My hat is off to the owners for creating such an asset for western Michigan. The local population may not fully appreciate how unique this property is, but based on my travels throughout the US, this property doesn't play second to too many others.

Very well done and keep up the good work.

This was my first trip to Grand Rapids. Downtown is lovely. The Marriott is new (I believe it opened in September 2007). We had a great view of downtown and the outdoor ice rink from our 15th floor room.

The bathroom is very chic - marble tile everywhere, a seperate tub and shower. The vanity is neat artistically, but doesn't leave much room for getting ready.

The bed was very comfortable with many pillows and a neat little reading lamp.

The fitness room is average for this type of hotel. There is an indoor pool and a hot tub.

The hotel is right next to the river so there are some nice views from the bar and restaurant.

Staff is very friendly.

  • Liked — new, contemporary room
  • Disliked — if you have more than 2 people, the size of the room may be an issue

I originally have been a big Amway Grand Plaza Hotel fan, the hotel that is across the street from the JW, but having stayed there on a whim the first week they were open I am now a firm JW advocate. If you want an old eligant hotel thats behind the time technologicaly, stay at the Amway, if you want a hotel that has every little detail covered, technologicaly advanced room amenities and a steller staff then stay at the JW. The rooms all have cordless phones that you can use anywhere in the building, so if you are at the pool and someone calls your room, you can still get your call. The wireless internet is always a must, but beyond that the JW has huge flat screen TVs in every room that have plug-ins for your laptop, Ipod or what ever, in case you want to play your music over the TVs speakers, or watch a movie you have loaded on your laptop on the TV. Plus all the cabling is supplied. Each room also has a safe with a 4 digit code you can set to what ever you want, great for all those of us that travel with a sidearm.
Beyond the techno, the rooms are completely plush, everything is first rate, super soft beds, sheets, the works. The bathroom has a great shower for 2 (beleive me) and a huge tub.
The breakfast buffet that is served in the resteraunt down stairs is first rate, with a chef on hand to make you fresh waffels or pancakes.
You won't be disappointed
