“If the Hotel is Sold Out.....”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2012

you may be able to find rooms on Hotwire or Hotels.com. That's how we finally got a room. It was $179/night, so I don't think it was any deal. Both web sites named the hotel and the rate.

Check-in was nothing short of amazing. When I saw a line of at least a dozen guests, I began to panic. Then I noticed something unusual. Have you ever seen a front desk with 7 clerks? All of them were actually working, too. Our wait in line lasted all of about 2 minutes.

We had called ahead and requested the older section of the hotel. It was truly elegant. Yes, the room was on the small side, but had high ceilings. The bathroom was small enough so that if you stretched out your arms, you could touch both walls. That said, the marble tile in the bathroom was beautiful. The accent tiles were in a burnt sienna and the shower curtain was white, with a burnt sienna "A" embroidered on it and burnt sienna braided trim at the bottom. Walls in the bathroom and room were beige on beige, with lots of molding. I'm not a big fan of the carpeting in the hotel. It's very bold, in navy, green, and gold. The room's drapes looked like 1980. The television set was a large flat-screen, circa 2012. There was an in-room single-cup coffee maker.
Two other drawbacks, that kept this hotel from getting all 5 starts, was the noise, mentioned in earlier reviews, and lack of towels in the bathroom. Noise also comes from the street. For some reason, it sounded like drag races off and on, but it was a Sat. night. Also, you hear every door on your floor slam closed. Please, if you stay here, hang on to the door until it closes, especially late at night and in the early morning hours. If a room has two queen beds and if your reservation is for 3 people, why can't there be more than 2 sets of towels in the bathroom?

Two great restaurants I can recommend, withing walking distance, are Bistro Bella Vita for dinner (currently #4 on tripadvisor) and Sundance Grill for breakfast (#36). The conceirge told us Sundance wasn't open on Sundays, but my husband's smart phone told him differently.

The only other recommendation I have is not to miss the Pantlind lobby. It's not the lobby where you check-in. It's actually a beautiful room, past the main lobby, in the old section of the hotel. The chandeliers are breathtaking, certainly the most lovely I have ever seen.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your extremely thorough review of our hotel! We love hosting discerning guests, and are especially flattered or motivated by their comments. We're so glad for the expeditious experience you had with the front desk - we prepare carefully when expecting a large number of check-ins and pride ourselves on minimizing any wait. We're also glad that you appreciated the detail and charm of the historic side of the hotel, though sorry that the noise disturbed you. The tower side of the hotel tends to be much quieter. Also, we're sorry that there was a lack of towels - next time you stay with us please feel free to request more towels from the front desk or our housekeeping staff and we're happy to provide you with them. We hope to see you again soon, and thank you again for your detailed review!

At your service,

C. Smith

My fiancee and I stayed here Aug 17-19 and we had a wonderful stay. The rate was pretty reasonable for being in a luxurious hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. The front desk and concierge provided us with a lot of helpful information.

We were in the area for a wedding and I needed a piece of jewelry last minute and decided to check in the hotels gift stores near the main lobby. When I was unable to find one, a representative from a boutique asked me if she could help, and sent me to another store in the hotel and I was able to get exactly what I needed (and on sale!).

The room we had overlooked the river and was very clean and updated. We will certainly stay at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel again.

Room Tip: We had the Superior King room and it was very nice!

For under $200 a night you get a 4 plus star resort hotel in one of the cleanest mid sized cities in Michigan. They do the little things: concierge, fully equipped fitness center with attendant; 4 restaurant options; convenience store; fast front desk; covered valet; next to convention center; walking distance to museums, dining, and clubs.

Thank you for posting the review, and we look forward to seeing you again the next time you are in Grand Rapids.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review about your stay and for your positive comments about our hotel. We agree that the Boutique Emmanuel Too store on the second floor of the Exhibitors Building is a must - with excellent prices on the overstock from Boutique Emmanuel in the lobby. We are glad you had such a lovely stay and hope to host you again sometime soon! Thank you again for posting the review.

The Amway Grand Plaza has a split personality: on one side, a classic, old hotel built during the days when ambiance was everything. On the other side, a modern high rise that dominates the skyline. I was lucky enough to stay in the "classic" side. The rooms in the classic hotel actually still have transoms above the doors, although they're boarded up. But that gives you an idea of the age of the hotel... and I mean that in a good way. The rooms and public areas have all been upgraded through the years, and the hotel has done a nice job of making things feel more modern without removing any of the charm of the classic hotel it once was. While my room was smaller than I would have expected, it certainly didn't feel cramped or crowded, and was fine for one or two people. The staff was extremely attentive, the cleaning staff always smiled and said "hello," (I must've passed two dozen of them in the week I was there, and each and every one greeted me.) . The only negative I have about the place was the fact that my neighbors were very noisy and, with the bed right up against that common wall, I found it hard to fall asleep several nights. All in all, though, this was a very nice hotel and provided me with a very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: The 10th floor has a nice view, and elevators are fast and come quickly.

We stayed at the Amway Plaza this past weekend while attending a wedding.
Our first time in Grand Rapids, guest services very helpful in letting us know what there was to do nearby. Definitely check out the Meijer Botanical Gardens-a short drive.
The hotel is large and old classic. Very clean. Our room in the "older wing" had been remodeled, although not large, had everything we needed for my wife and I. Just an fyi, every bit of noise, even at conversation level from the hall travels into your room. Hope you have a quiet floor or are sound sleeper.
The group rate for the room was very fair. Beware that the charge for parking is $25 for valet and $19 a nite for self service with in and out privliges. We did valet and they were quick on the car delivery when we needed it. The charge was half as part of the group package. That helped.

The staff was very friendly and the ballrooms are beautiful.
The event manager and bartenders at the wedding reception were ok in the personality dept, but the wait staff was very nice.
The indoor pool and fitness area are nice. Good downtown location, felt safe and very walking friendly, we were able to walk for close to an hour and stay in inhabited areas.

Dear Valued Guest,

We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay when you attended a wedding here at the hotel, and that you had a chance to take in some of the wonderful things to do in Grand Rapids - like visit Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. While we appreciate your compliments on the grandeur of the hotel and the beauty of our ballrooms, we are most touched by your kind words about our staff. They are truly the heart of the hotel and amaze us every day with their dedication to service. We hope that you will stop by and visit us next time you are in the area.

This is really a beautiful place to see. It's huge! The old-style lobby and ballrooms have extraordinary detail. The hotel room I was in was pretty but beware, the walls are thin. At 2:00 am I could clearly hear the party people who took their fun to their room. I was on the 11th floor with no view to speak of. The doors to the rooms slam if you don't take time to guide them closed so that makes for that jarring noise all night as well.

Room Tip: If you ask for a room with a view I am not sure what you would get. I was on the top floor and it wa...

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you so much for staying at our hotel while you were in Grand Rapids, and for your kind words about the beauty of our hotel. Based on your review, it sounds like you stayed in the Historic Pantlind side of the hotel. While this side boasts beautiful, classic features and each room has unique character, the soundproofing is less thorough than on the tower side of the hotel because of its historic nature. If you're seeking a very quiet evening, we recommend requesting the tower side next time you stay with us. Thank you again for your review, and we hope to see you again soon!
