I stayed at this hotel about a week ago. The price was very reasonable, the room was clean, and the breakfast was much more expansive than I expected. Overall, the staff and managers were friendly and accommodating. I will be returning to the Gatehouse Suites in Grand Rapids.

I've been staying at Gatehouse Suites for the last two years, typically 3 days/week for business travel, my home away from home; it is comfortable, quiet, and clean. I've stayed at every hotel within 5 miles of the airport, and simply stated, this is the best value for the dollar. Staff is “very friendly,” always going above & beyond to welcome and accommodate. Rooms are very generous in size, come with a full kitchen, and even a fireplace, which I don’t use (very similar to a studio apartment). My schedule doesn’t typically allow me take advantage of the free breakfast, or the Managers Special, but when I do, it’s certainly appreciated. Most importantly, and worth repeating, the primary reason(s) I am a regular customer is because the rooms are large, quiet, and clean.

Room Tip: Although some might not like hauling their suitcases up the stairs, rooms on the second floor, and...

When we booked a 2 bedroom suite, we didn't realize that we would be hauling all of our luggage up a flight of stairs on the outside of the condo suite... it was spacious, had a full kitchen, and a loft... definitely spacious for my wife and 4 kids. But didn't realize that it would create a dangerous situation. The loft had a second bathroom, but the bed and bedside tables were flush against the half-wall. Our young kids (all under 5 yrs old) could have easily climbed up the half-wall and fallen off the second floor down to the first floor living room! They should really put a disclaimer not recommending their 2 bedroom suites for families with young children...

The bed was TERRIBLE. As in, no support at all and I needed some extra strength tylenol just to get out of bed. NO SUPPORT -- you need to replace those crummy beds with some quality... felt like was I was going to fall into the headboard.

Also, breakfast ended at 8:30am each morning so never got to experience that... would have required bundling up the whole family in winter gear to walk over to the main building.

Ever heard of using salt to clear the ice? Dangerous ice in the parking lot... on the walk-way... AND on the steps... glad I didn't fall and hurt myself hauling luggage on the ice...

Room Tip: Unless you want to be hauling luggage up the steps outside, choose a 1-bedroom on the first floor...

We've come back year after year. It was once a Marriott Residence Inn and doesn't quite make it up to the standards set forth by that company. However, the room is spacious and you can live like you're at home. There's also a complimentary breakfast that includes eggs, waffles, and sometimes breakfast meats.
The staff is very eager to please and there's no reason to go anywhere else.

Room Tip: Stay away from the Beltline but close enough to front desk.

We have been staying here for the past 5+ years each December for a night mid-week. This used to be a Residence Inn and was always kept up to Marriott's high standards. Last year was the first year we stayed here with the new management/name. It was fine then. This year, the breakfast was below standards, the rooms weren't as clean (found a towel behind the bathroom door from previous tenant) and all in all just not what we were used to. Sad to say next year we'll probably move to another hotel.

The room was actually an efficiency apartment, well appointed for someone ready to stay longer than one night. The shower/tub were good, average cleanliness, fine towels. The bedding was good, double sheeted, queen size bed, a comfortable sofa though the TV was standard. The kitchen had a dishwasher, table, chairs, microwave and coffee pot.
These "apartments" each have separate entries, and they are tricky to find. The desk, manned with very helpful staff, would serve clients well with a drawn map.
The furnace is loud, but not a bother to everyone, it does heat up quickly, and I noticed someone commented on room being cold. I found the floors drafty. A nice feature in December was the heat lamp in the bathroom.
It is in a high traffic area so it can be noisy, but I found that not to be a problem. We had food delivered from a list of restaurants brought to us by desk clerk.
The breakfast is quite complete with eggs, sausages, English muffins, waffles, coffee and real half-half though in room coffee makers have powdered whitener. I noticed there is also an excercise room. All in all it was plesant and it just depends on what kind of accomodations one prefers. We were traveling with a number of family members for a graduation and it would have been more convenient, for us had we known, to be in a hotel with a central hallway where we could have visited back and forth. For someone traveling with kids having the large space and furniture would probably be helpful.
If you order food delivered be sure to ask when it will be arriving. Our food came 1 hour and 40 minutes after ordering though the delivery man was very pleasant even though he had to make two calls to us from the parking lot in order to find our unit.

Room Tip: Lower units can hear persons upstairs, 2nd floor, no elevator, if they are noisy.

We stayed here this past weekend for the GVSU graduation. It was dark out and the sign was very difficult to see because it didn't light up, so you have to look for for the SmashBurger sign across the street (whatever that is!). The room was a bit tricky to find, but was a nice size with a comfortable bed, a fully equipped kitchen and a large mirror area outside the bathroom that made it easy to get ready in the morning while husband showered. The drawbacks were that we were in the front building and could hear street noise, the heat wouldn't regulate and I finally just turned it off, and the pull out couch bed was old and very uncomfortable. The desk staff were very accommodating and the breakfast was a bonus. The hotel is located in an area with a lot of stores and restaurants and Friday's was in walking distance. My sister stayed on the first floor and her room had a fireplace. Again, far from luxury, and only comfortable for 2 people max per room, but a decent value.

Room Tip: Even if you book through a travel site call the hotel and ask for a room further from the road.
