“Nice, but Hard to Find”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2008

We were here for a two night stay on Memorial Day weekend while visiting relatives in Grand Rapids. When we pulled in the parking lot (about 7:30 PM), we wondered what happened here. There was not one single other car there, except for the desk attendant's. Wow -- what's wrong here, we asked. Turns out that this is pretty much just a "business hotel", the desk attendant told us (and he was a very helpful person I might add -- no matter what the question we had or assistance we needed.)

They don't have much other traffic there -- and I'm not surprised. They would never get a walk-in from the road, because they are situated off a side-road, back in the trees and other office buildings -- with no sign on the side road. We passed it twice before we figured out where it was.

So we had the place pretty much to ourselves, although I would guess there were about 15 cars on the lot in the morning. Very quiet -- not a sound from the hallways, and obviously no road noise.

We had reserved a regular king room, but when we asked if it had a fridge or microwave ........ he said "no, but I can move you into a king suite, no problem -- we have plenty of empty rooms." So we had a nice mini-suite, and it was all very much up to the Fairfield standards that you would expect.

Only two complaints: this Fairfield still has those lumpy, hard-as- a-rock foam pillows, but that's not a problem for us, since we travel with our own pillows when driving. The other problem was the A/C, which did not work properly the first night -- but it did so the 2nd night -- never could figure that out. Got pretty warm in the room the first night, and once again, the same desk attendant was more than willing to move us to another room -- but we just didn't want to be bothered with that. Turned out to be a good decision. He assured us that the maintenance man would be checking it out after we left.

So it pretty much met all our basic expectations for a Fairfield Inn, and we got a free room upgrade besides.

After staying in a stellar Hampton Inn the week before, I was sorely disappointed by this FI. The room was sparse and looked more like a newer Motel 6 than a Marriott property. But, the room and shower were clean. If I went back to GR, I would spend the extra $10 and stay at a better property.

This review is written by a business traveler who typically frequents Marriott and Hilton-chain hotels. This review is based on a 2-night stay in September 2007.

The hotel meets the quality one typically expects in a Fairfield Inn property. It is evident that this was a older hotel that someone attempted to renovate some time ago, with mixed results.

Pros:
- curved shower bar.
- close to airport.
- reasonably priced.

Opportunities for improvement:
- some cleanliness issues.
- strange room smell.
- old, tattered (fraying) bed linens. (yet of the new Marriott design, and so they must have been overused / overwashed.)

I booked three rooms for a group that was at a conference at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary and the service was excellent. The rooms were comfortable, clean and cheerful. When we found ourselves in the midst of a snow storm the following day, I called to see if we could get rooms for an additional night and was cheerfully taken care of by the workers who were also snowed in. They even gave us a discounted rate for the second night. We were also given the use of the breakfast room to have a late night planning meeting! The staff was great!

The first time I stayed at this hotel ,I was very impressed. So impressed that I made a reservation for the following month
( when I would be taking my Granddaughter to the Devos hospital). They gave an additional discount because of our going to childrens hospital. The staff was very friendly and helpful as to giving us directions and offering info. on where to go what to see and places to eat..We have stayed there every time we bring my Granddaughter to Devos. There have been times that the staff haven't been as friendly as others but I think that was when the manager was having her baby and a man from another hotel was running Fairfield. We get clean rooms, a great continetal breakfast and a friendly helpful staff (for the most part) at a GREAT price. The pool room has always been clean along with the pool.

The Fairfield Inn on Stahl in Grand Rapids, MI was a disappointment, despite the helpful, courteous staff. The halls and bathtub were not clean. They did not provide coffee for 24 hours, and the coffee in the room was weak unless you made one cup. The bedding was a very nice quality, and the waffles for breakfast were fun. However, the strawberry topping for the waffles appeared to have been used before and not fresh. With all the competition around the airport, they will need to pay attention to details.
